In 1980s, Bollywood was seeing two musical fads simultaneously. One was Disco and other was ghazal. The mainstream Bollywood movies were full of disco songs where charaters would wear shiny clothes and gyrate on the tunes of racy Bappi Lahiri numbers.
Then there were art movies ( a euphemism for movies made by producers who were broke) which hit upon the formula of showing real life. As far as they were concerned, real life people sang ghazals, so l these movies were full of ghazals typically sung by modestly and conservatively dressed characters.
This particular song from the movie “Baazaar” was among the more popular songs of such movies.
And now that I think about it, it appears to me that these ghazals of 1980s are proving to be more popuar than the disco songs of that era. And we should not really be surprised with this fact.

“dekh lo aaj ham ko jee bhar ke” & “phir chidi raat baat phoolon ki” are also very poignant songs from this film. Among non-commercial films of that period this film was an exception, with a main stream music director and lot of effort invested in songs also.
