Nanha munna raahi hoon

Posted on: November 13, 2008

India of 1960s was a much more simple and uncomplicated nation, where cynicism about the nation and its leaders had yet to take roots. People actually looked upto the national leaders. Every household compulsorily had the pictures of national leaders on their drawing room walls.Framed photographs of Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Prasad, and Jawaharlal Nehru were there in all households.

People, including kids actually dreamt of big things for the nation.

The movies of those days also reflected this sentiment. There were quite a few songs talking about serving the nation that became hugely popular.

Most such songs, including patriotic songs that became popular were sung by well known singers. In fact, even songs supposed to be sung by kids on screen were actually sung by grownups (female singers). It was in early 1960s that this anomaly was addressed for the first time. Thus, in “Son of India”, one sees a kid giving playback for a kid.

This song was “nanha munna rahi hoon, desh ka sipahi hoon”. This song plucked at the heart strings of all Indians and this song almost became as popular as the national anthem.

When I listened to this song again after many decades, I could not help but feel nostalgic about those days when people actually talked about making India a great nation. The line in the song that talks of “bada hoke desh ka sahaara banoonga”, moves me even today.

Feeling nostalgic, I tried to find the whereabouts of the people involved in creating this masterpiece. We all know about Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad, the lyricist and music director respectively, of this song. The song was sung by Shanti Mathur. There is very little information available about her. She must be in her 50s now and she must be known by some other surname by now. I hope and wish that she, wherever she is, is leading a happy life. This one song is enough to make her a legend in our eyes.

What about the kid, on whom this song is picturised ? This kid is called Sajid Khan. Most fans quickly jump to the conclusion that he is the same Sajid Khan who is seen in TV these days spoofing film actors. That is not the case. The present day TV actor is in his 40s and is too young to have acted in the 1962 movie that “Son of India” was. The Sajid Khan (born in 1951) of “Son of India” was an adopted son of Mehboob Khan and this movie “son of India” was made by Mehboob Khan. This Sajid Khan is no longer in show business, though he acted in movies till 1980s. “Heat and Dust” (1983) was his last movie. In fact, this Sajid Khan acted as a child artist in Mehboob Khan’s “Mother India” as well in 1957.

This song is one of the most sought after song especially on the eve of the republic day and independence day of India, because lots of school kids, their parents and teachers all over the country seek the lyrics of this song, and many of them visit this page. A long pending request of readers was to provide the translation of this iconic patriotic song. Now Sudhir jee has been kind enough to provide the translation of this song.

Lyrics

Nanha munna raahi hoon
desh ka sipaahi hoon
bolo mere sang
jai Hind, jai Hind, Jai Hind
jai Hind, jai Hind
Nanha munna raahi hoon
desh ka sipaahi hoon
bolo mere sang
jai Hind, jai Hind,
Jai Hind
jai Hind, jai Hind

raste mein chaloongaa na dar-dar ke
chaahe mujhe jeenaa pade mar-mar ke
manzil se pahle na loongaa kahin dam
aage hi aage badhaaungaa kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!
Nanha munna raahi hoon
desh ka sipaahi hoon
bolo mere sang
jai Hind, jai Hind,
Jai Hind
jai Hind, jai Hind
ho ho ho ho ho

dhoop mein paseenaa main bahaaungaa jahaan
ho ho ho
hare-bhare khet laharaayenge wahaan
ho ho ho
dharti pe faake na paayenge janam
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!
Nanha munna raahi hoon
desh ka sipaahi hoon
bolo mere sang
jai Hind, jai Hind,
Jai Hind
aa aa aa
jai Hind, jai Hind

nayaa hai zamaanaa
meri nayi hai dagar
desh ko banaaungaa masheenon kaa nagar
Bhaarat kisi se rahegaa nahin kam
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!
Nanha munna raahi hoon
desh ka sipaahi hoon
bolo mere sang
jai Hind, jai Hind,
Jai Hind
jai Hind, jai Hind

badaa ho ke desh kaa sahaaraa banoongaa
duniyaa ki aankhon kaa taaraa banoongaa
rakhoongaa oonchaa tirangaa parcham
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!
Nanha munna raahi hoon
desh ka sipaahi hoon
bolo mere sang
jai Hind, jai Hind,
Jai Hind
jai Hind, jai Hind

shaanti ki nagri hai meraa ye watan
sabko sikhaaungaa main pyaar kaa chalan
duniyaa mein girne na doongaa kahin bam
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!
Nanha munna raahi hoon
desh ka sipaahi hoon
bolo mere sang
jai Hind, jai Hind,
Jai Hind
jai Hind, jai Hind
ho ho ho ho ho

Nanha munna raahi hoon
desh ka sipaahi hoon
bolo mere sang
jai Hind, jai Hind,
jai Hind
jai Hind, jai Hind

A tiny moppet explorer, I am
And a tenderfoot soldier of my land
Come, sing along with me
Glory be to my India

raste pe chalungaa na dar-dar ke
chaahe mujhe jeenaa pade mar-mar ke
manzil se pahle na loongaa kahin dam
aage hi aage badhaaungaa kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!

I have no fear in traversing unknown paths of peril
No matter if this life is a painful struggle
Rest I will not, till I accomplish my aspirations
Till then, I will continue to march forward
Left right, left right, Halt !

dhoop mein paseenaa main bahaaungaa jahaan
hare-bhare khet lahraayenge wahaan
dharti pe faake na paayenge janam
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!

Wherever my sweat will fall, under the blazing sun
There-all fertile crops will be waving in the winds
Hunger will find no place on this earth
Till then, I will continue to march forward
Left right, left right, Halt !

nayaa hai zamaanaa meri nayi hai dagar
desh ko banaaungaa masheenon kaa nagar
Bhaarat kisi se rahegaa nahin kam
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, tham!

New pathways, new efforts are leading to a new age
My nation I will make, a marvel of technology and machines
Bharat, my land, will be second to none in the world
Till then, I will continue to march forward
Left right, left right, Halt !

badaa ho ke desh kaa sahaaraa banungaa
duniyaa ki aankhon kaa taaraa banungaa
rakhungaa oonchaa tirangaa parcham
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!

I will provide care and safety to my nation, when I grow up
And will be a shining star in the eyes of everybody
I will keep the tricolor flag flying high always
Till then, I will continue to march forward
Left right, left right, Halt !

shaanti ki nagri hai meraa ye watan
sabko sikhaaungaa main pyaar kaa chalan
duniyaa mein girne na doongaa kahin bam
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!

This land of mine is a realm of peace
I will teach the path of peace and love to every one
And will dissuade nations from using (nuclear) weapons
Till then, I will continue to march forward
Left right, left right, Halt !

Lovely song.
So much patriotism….it has to leave an impact on you.

Exactly Mr. Raja. In the name of change our present day Cinema fails to deliever any kind of feeling of Patriotism.

Mr. Atul, Now you have reminded me two songs from the same film.

“Son of India”

First is “Dil Todne Wale” and Second “Aaj Ki Taja Khabar”

Please put them on your blog (as soon as possible).

Hi,
I was looking for the lyrics of this song from such a long time as my kid wanted it to sing in this years Independence day celebration . We know the song and i insisted her to sing this one but was not sure about the lyrics thanks a lot.

Nice to be of help.Mrs Joshi. I am sure this will be a much sought after song among school kids for the independence day celebrations.

Smt. Shanti Mathur is now in her late 80s, and yes, leading a happy life with her beloved sons and daughter and grand children, despite her health troubles.

This Shanti Mathur must be in her 50s, rather than in her 80s and moreover , she must be known by some other surname. Shanti Mathur who is in her 80s is a different person.

BEAUTIFUL TOUCHY SONG!!!

yasmeen zaman/ cymu

a very beautiful n touching song indeed! thanks a ton

I have read all your comments above. Shanti Mathur is actually my sister-in-law, I am married to her brother, incidentally also called Atul. Shanti jiji is 78 years old, lives in Worli in Bombay, with her husband Mr. Harit. She is in very good health. She now translates scripts for Discovery Channel, working from home. Her other well known songs are Aaj ki Taaza khabar, Insaan tha pehele bandar & the popular Binaca jingle ‘Mummy kehte hain I love you…” Her 2 sons and 2 bahus both live abroad (UK & USA).

Smt. Shanti-ji Mathur ke baare mein jaankaari ke liye SHUKRIYA. main unse baat karke ek article likhna chahta hoon, unke contact no. mail kar sake, to badi meharbaani hogi.

great to learn the song..this too for my five yr old twin kid who was reluctant to participate in her school day because she was unaware of the lyrics. This site is of great help and reading the comments to know about the originator of this voice is so life-full. Divine knowing you all, virtually. its a god’s world.

Lots of kids are preparing to sing patriotic songs on the eve of Independence day. This and other patriotic songs are the most searched songs in this blog these days.

It is patriotic very good song

I’m one of those people who grew up seeing this song on Chitrahaar on Doordarshan. Thank you for this blog post and the trivia about the song. By the way, the dog’s name was Ceaser. This song is probably my earliest recollection of wanting to have a dog. :D

Atul,
Most people confuse this Sajid Khan with Farah Khan’s brother . He is not. Thanks for clarifying this. Also Sajid Khan in this song resembles Rahul Roy a bit.
Son of India featured Waheeda Rehman’s husband Kanwaljeet and Kum Kum. Kum Kum is Govinda’s aunt and also David Dhawan’s mother. Simi Garewal debuted in “Son of India”. She came to Ifia from the UK.

Can anyone pls translate this song in english? I would love to understand before learning to sing.

The translation is now available. Many thanks to Sudhir jee for that.
