atul's bollywood song a day- with full lyrics

Tera hijr mera naseeb hai

Posted on: December 11, 2008

“Razia Sultan”, the Kamal Amrohi movie made on the only female emperor to rule Delhi, had some very nice ( and different ) songs.

Kamal Amrohi decided that Yakut, the black slave ( played by Dharmendra) too needed to sing songs. Unlike the safe option of getting songs recorded in the voice of usual singers, Kamal Amrohi searched far and wide for a non profesional singer who could do justice to the personality of Yakut. And the singer who got chosen was Kabban Mirza.

Kabban Mirza was an announcer in Vividh Bharati ( music channel of All India Radio), Bombay and his deep, booming voice set him apart from other announcers.

Kabban Mirza sang two songs in “Razia Sultan”. One song was “aayi zanjeer ki jhankaar Khuda khair kare”, which has been posted in this blog already.

The other song sung by him in this movie was ” tera hijr mera naseeb hai”.

The lyrics contains words that are of Urdu/Persian and may not be familiar to many. But they are very concise and appropriate words to express the feeling of Yakut. Once I got the meanings of the difficult words, meaning of the esoteric sounding lyrics became reasonably clear. This is one song which needs to be translated for better appreciation of the beauty of this song. And it is an extremely beautiful song, once we understand the meaning of the words.

Song- Tera hijr mera naseeb hai (Razia Sultan) (1983) Singer- Kabban Mirza, Lyrics- Nida Fazli, MD- Khayyam

Lyrics

teraa hijr meraa naseeb hai
teraa hijr meraa naseeb hai
teraa gham
teraa gham hi meri hayaat hai
mujhe teri doori kaa gham ho kyun
mujhe teri doori kaa gham ho kyun
tu kahin bhi ho mere saath hai
tu kahin bhi ho mere saath hai
teraa hijr meraa naseeb hai

mere vaaste tere naam par
mere vaaste tere naam par
koyi harf aaye nahin nahin
mujhe Khaufe duniyaa nahin
mujhe Khaufe duniyaa nahin
magar mere ruu-ba-ruu teri zaat hai
mere ruu-ba-ruu teri zaat hai
teraa hijr meraa naseeb hai

teraa vasl ai meri dilrubaa
teraa vasl ai meri dilrubaa
nahin meri kismat to kyaa huaa
meri mahjabeen
meri mahjabeen
meri mahjabeen yahi kam hai kyaa
teri hasraton kaa to saath hai
teri hasraton kaa to saath hai
teraa hijr meraa naseeb hai

teraa ishq mujh pe hai maharbaan
mere dil ko haasil hai do jahaan
meri jaan-e-jaan isi baat par
meri jaan jaaye to baat hai

Translation

Separation from you is my fate,
Your sorrow is my life
Why should I be sad on being away from you
since you are with me irrespective of your whereabouts

I don’t want any blemish on your name
On account of me
Not that I am scared of the society
But my whole concern is the sanctity of your persona

I am not destined to have a union with you, my dear
but my desires about you are with me

You have favoured me with your love
And that means the world to me
And this in fact is worth my life itself

Oh, thank you for the translation…I just love the music from this film.

Even the fans who are fluent in Hindi need translation of this song to understand this song. Words like “hijr”, “hayaat”, “harf” and “vasl” make it a difficult song to understand. That is why I felt that this song needed to be translated.

Great song…has been my favourite since the last 10 years……

thank u very much for giving details about the singer. i wanted to know this for quite some years. pls. let me know whether kabban mirza has sung some other song too.

thanking you again.

Kabban Mirza sang one more song in the same movie, as I have already mentioned above.

He may have sung some non filmy songs as well.

Thanks for the effort in translating this gem of a song…..

The translation of the first stanza is a little different IMHO

mere vaaste tere naam par
mere vaaste tere naam par
koyi harf aaye nahin nahin
mujhe Khaufe duniyaa nahin
mujhe Khaufe duniyaa nahin
magar mere ruu-ba-ruu teri zaat hai
mere ruu-ba-ruu teri zaat hai
teraa hijr meraa naseeb hai

I don’t want any blemish on your name
On account of me
Not that I am scared of the world
But because I am surrounded by people you live amongst

Also, could you also post a translation of Khuda Khair kare?

Thanks

I believe Neeti is right. Couldn’t agree more, her version is the proper translation of the first stanza.

This is my version for khuda khair kare (“aayee zanjeer ki jhankaar”), specially for Neeti.

god give me peace
comes the tinkling of chains
my heart is her prisoner
god give me peace

who was it that passed, touching my soul
who was it
a danger has been thwarted
god give me peace
each second weighs my sight
a flashing sword, god give me peace
a flashing sword

the blood of my heart
let it not spurt from my eyes
[her] acceptance, o, let it not happen,
god give me peace

Thanks Neeti, and Thanks Zeinab for your translations. I have included them in my writeup.

“Tera Hijr mera naseeb hai” translation is excellent.

But there is scope for change in interpretation ;

“mujhe Khaufe duniyaa nahin
magar mere ruu-ba-ruu teri zaat hai ”

“Not that I am scared of the society (social environment)
But my whole concern is the sanctity of your persona”

The usage of “zaat” here means entity/existence.

Regards.

the voice of kabban mirza suited very well to the muscular, rustic, slave (yakut)dharmendra who was helplessely in love with razia(hema).
some other bollywood melodies which have touched me………
aaj rang hai(mohani’s qawwali)from junoon(1978)
naghma o sher ki saugaat kise pesh karoon(ghazal)
raat bhar aapki yaad aati rahi(gaman)

What beautiful lyrics, sometimes wonder how they get these beautiful thoughts.Amazing superb class!!!! I cant express the beauty in words of these lyrics.

excellent translation of both the songs……m in love with them even more…….how cud such touching lyrics be ever imagined ……..the lyrics just tear the heart apart n the pain spurts out…………

thanks for this posting this wonderful rendition and the translation of Kabban mirza’s song…you have a done a marvelous job atul.

Atul, thank you so much for this wonderful translation. This is one of my most favourite song. I think Kabban Mirza’s voice is so hauting. I can listen to this song over and over again. ti is a shame he has only sung two songs, as I would have love to listen to more of his songs. The meaning of this song is very special to me. Reminds me of good old days.

Atul..thnx frm the core of my heart. I had been looking fr this song fr last about 8 yrs n just had one word hijr in my memory. And now I found it at 2 am and that too with lyrics n beautiful translation…u r great..thnx again fr ur efforts n time. Hugs.
