Yaad kiya dil ne kahaan ho tum

Posted on: December 18, 2008

It is a very old song, but very much a gold standard song. I have listened to this song for a long time and liked it very much. Sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata, this is such a lovely “chayageet” kind of song, ideal listening at sleep times, though one can enjoy it anytime, as befits any timeless song, which it certainly is.

Hasrat Jaipuri was the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music. This song was picturised on Dev Anand and Usha Kiron ( anyone has any idea who she was ?) and the movie was called Patita (1953). Few people may have heard of this movie, but this song has undoubtedly become an immortal song.

Song-Yaad kiya dil ne kahan ho tum (Patita) (1953) Singers-Lata, Hemant Kumar, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

yaad kiyaa dil ne kahaan ho tum
jhoomti bahaar hai kahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum
yaad kiyaa dil ne kahaan ho tum
jhoomti bahaar hai kahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum

o, kho gaye ho aaj kis khayaal mein
o, dil fansaa hai bebsi ke jaal mein
o, kho gaye ho aaj kis khayaal mein
o, dil fansaa hai bebsi ke jaal mein
matlabi jahaan meharbaan ho tum
yaad kiyaa dil ne kahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum

o, raat dhal chuki hai subah ho gayi
o, mai tumhaari yaad leke kho gayi
o, raat dhal chuki hai subah ho gayi
o, mai tumhaari yaad leke kho gayi
ab to meri daastaan ho tum
yaad kiyaa dil ne kahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum

o, tum hamari zindagi ke baagh ho
o, tum hamaari raah ke chiraagh ho
o, tum hamari zindagi ke baagh ho
o, tum hamaari raah ke chiraagh ho
mere liye aasamaan ho tum
yaad kiyaa dil ne kahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum
yaad kiyaa dil ne kahaan ho tum
jhoomti bahaar hai kahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum
pyaar se pukaar lo jahaan ho tum
hmmm
hmmm
hmmm

Usha Kiran (I don’t know where the “Kiron” spelling came from) who I recall was a well known Marathi actress who also acted in Hindi movies. One of the early tall buildings in Mumbai was named Usha Kiran; I am not sure if it had any connection with her name.

It is Kiran, but then we have all kinds of spelling flying around these days.

This movie had a couple of other good songs too, including the one by Lata “Kisine apna banake mujhko muskurana sikhaa diya …”. All the songs in this movie seem to flow so smoothly, like wine on silk or honey. I think SJ did an outstanding job in this movie, and this must have been one of their early ones.

Hemant Kumar’s voice is so good in this song and blends so well with Lata’s, giving it a dreamy quality.

A real gem of a song!

Lovely song.
I just love it.

This movie has two Talat classics too.
“Andhe jahaan ke andhe raaste” and “Hai sab se madhur wo geet”. So , that’s like the Fab-4 in one movie.

Thanks for the information on the additional songs fom this movie, Lalitha and Raja. Undoubtedly they are just as good. I will post these songs too.

Lots of hardwork! Just chanced upon your site and wanted to congratulate you. I’d been looking on the net to find out who the lyricist of this song was – and finally found it here. Well done – it’s a really helpful site.

Thanks for your kind words, Rohini. Indeed this blog is a labour of love. And it is encouragements like this that helps me to keep going.

Usha Kiran was a famous actress of Hindi and Marathi films. In a span of 40 years’ career she acted in 300 odd films, won many awards including Filmfare award in 1954 fo BAADBAAN.
She last acted in CHUPKE CHUPKE in 1975 as elder sister of Sharmila Taqgore and wife of Omprakash.
She was Mumbai’s Sheriff in 1996-1997.
Married to Dr.Manohar Kher, she had a son and daughter (Tanvi Azmi-wife of Baba Azmi, brother of Shabana Azmi. )
No connection whatsoever to Ushakiran building in Mumbai.

Excellent song. The songs begins with a melodious harmonium sequence that is missing in your YouTube clip. AIR rarely played the song from the beginning so i heard it years later. There are several other version on YouTube that carry that piece. Give it a listen.
All the songs in the movie are well known. Each shows up repeatedly in the respective anthalogys.

Thanks for pointing it out. Now I have provided a link with the harmonium portion.

LOVELY SONG….SOME CLIPS ON YOU TUBE OF THE SAME SONG PLAYED ON HARMONICA (mOUTH ORGAN) ARE VERY GOOD. WORTH LISTENING

meeti se khele te ho baar baar kise liye. Tremendous song from the same movie I suggest.Usha Kiran plays often sister roles like in the movie (can’t recall the name) with Raj kapoor en Vijantimala (mere peeche ek diwana) Baazi kisi ne pyaar ki, jeete.. HELP SOMEBODY. THE TITLE OF THE MOVIE. Thanks Roos

“Baazi kisi ne pyaar ki” is from “Nazraanaa” (1961). It has already been posted
Baazi kisi ne pyaar ki (Nazraana)
and also “Mere Peechhe ek deewaanaa”
Mere peechhe ik deewaanaa (Nazraanaa)

In fact the “Patita” song, “Mitti se khelte ho” has also been posted
