Dil ke jahrokhe mein tujhko bithaakar

Posted on: January 7, 2009

This movie “Brahmachari” reminds me so much of “Mr. India”, or rather, “Mr. India” should remind me of “Brahmachari” considering that “Brahmachari” was released two decades earlier.

“Mr India” added the comic book idea of the hero becoming invisible and that made “Mr India” a big hit, and a cult movie.

But minus the invisibility device and Mogambo, “Mr India” was “Brahmachari” mark II.

“Brahmachari” incidentally scores over “Mr India” when it comes to music. What memorable songs “Brahmachari” had. It had Rafi singing at his best.

Shammi Kapoor was a far more human like character as compared to Anil Kapoor two decades later. Here he is seen singing a “sad” song on piano in a club.

Sad song, did I say ? It must be a sad song because at the end of the song Rajshree searches for a tissue and Pran dutifully hands her one.

If one looks dispassionately at the lyrics of Hasrat Jaipuri, one wonders what it is. Had this lyrics been given to me in 1960s, I would not have known what to do with it. The lyrics to my mind are by andlarge meaningless. But nce it reached the hands of Shankar Jaikishan and Rafi sang this song, the seemingly meaningless song cast a magical spell over the listeners.

And to this date, four decades later, that spell is yet to be lifted.

There is little doubt in my mind that it is Rafi’s voice, followed by Shankar Jaikishan’s music that has led to this humdinger of a song. This song had become a big rage during its time. Of course, same was the case with another song from this movie viz. “Aaj kal tere mere pyaar ke charche har jubaan par”, sung by Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur ( already posted in this blog).

It is truly one of the iconic songs of Bollywood movies.

Song-Dil ke jharokhe me tujhko bithaakar (Brahmachari) (1968 ) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

dil ke jharokhe mein tujhko bithaakar
yaadon ko teri main dulhan banaakar
rakhoongaa main dil ke paas, mat ho meri jaan udaas
dil ke jharokhe mein tujhko bithaakar
yaadon ko teri main dulhan banaakar
rakhoongaa main dil ke paas, mat ho meri jaan udaas

kal tere jalwe paraaye bhi honge,
lekin jhalak mere khwaabon mein hogi
phoolon ki doli mein hogi tu rukhsat,
lekin mahak mere saanson mein hogi
kal tere jalwe paraaye bhi honge,
lekin jhalak mere khwaabon mein hogi
phoolon ki doli mein hogi tu rukhsat,
lekin mahak mere saanson mein hogi
dil ke jharokhe mein tujhko bithaakar
yaadon ko teri main dulhan banaakar
rakhoongaa main dil ke paas, mat ho meri jaan udaas

ab bhi tere surkh hothon ke pyaale,
mere tassawur mein saaqi bane hain
ab bhi teri zulf ke mast saaye,
birhaa ki dhoop mein saathi bane hain
ab bhi tere surkh hothon ke pyaale,
mere tassawur mein saaqi bane hain
ab bhi teri zulf ke mast saaye,
birhaa ki dhoop mein saathi bane hain
dil ke jharokhe mein tujhko bithaakar
yaadon ko teri main dulhan banaakar
rakhoongaa main dil ke paas, mat ho meri jaan udaas

meri muhabbat ko thukraa de chaahe,
main koyi tujhse naa shikwaa karoongaa
aankhon mein rahti hain tasweer teri,
saari umar teri poojaa karungaa
meri muhabbat ko thukraa de chaahe,
main koyi tujhse naa shikwaa karoongaa
aankhon mein rahti hain tasweer teri,
saari umar teri poojaa karungaa
dil ke jharokhe mein tujhko bithaakar
yaadon ko teri main dulhan banaakar
rakhoongaa main dil ke paas, mat ho meri jaan udaas
dil ke jharokhe mein tujhko bithaakar
yaadon ko teri main dulhan banaakar
rakhoongaa main dil ke paas, mat ho meri jaan udaas

I will place you in the window of my heart
And decorating your memories as a bride
I will always keep them in my heart
Don’t worry, my beloved
I will place you in the window of my heart
And decorating your memories as a bride
I will always keep them in my heart
Don’t worry, my beloved

Tomorrow your beauty will be someone else’s
But there will still be flashes in my dreams
You will be married off in a palanquin of flowers
But the fragrance of those flowers will remain in my senses
Tomorrow your beauty will be someone else’s
But there will still be flashes in my dreams
You will be married off in a palanquin of flowers
But the fragrance of those flowers will remain in my senses
I will place you in the window of my heart
And decorating your memories as a bride
I will always keep them in my heart
Don’t worry, my beloved
I will place you in the window of my heart
And decorating your memories as a bride
I will always keep them in my heart
Don’t worry, my beloved

Even now the glasses of wine formed by your sharp lips
Are in my imagination as intoxicating
Even now the shadows formed by your beautiful tresses
Are my companion in the barren, scorching heat/sunshine
Even now the glasses of wine formed by your sharp lips
Are in my imagination as intoxicating
Even now the shadows formed by your beautiful tresses
Are my companion in the barren, scorching heat/sunshine
I will place you in the window of my heart
And decorating your memories as a bride
I will always keep them in my heart
Don’t worry, my beloved

You may choose to reject my love
I have no complaint against you
There is and will always be a picture of you in my eyes
I will always worship you
You may choose to reject my love
I have no complaint against you
There is and will always be a picture of you in my eyes
I will always worship you
I will place you in the window of my heart
And decorating your memories as a bride
I will always keep them in my heart
Don’t worry, my beloved

another lovely song…took me a long time that what I understood as a kid to be “jamadaar” was jaan udaas”! :))

Atul, I find the lyrics beautiful.
Shammi thinks he has lost Rajshree to Pran. and he is singing this as a sort of “protest” song. Seen in this context, the lyrics are beautiful and meaningful.

In fact, come to think of it, you could have “protest” as a category…chahunga main tujhe saanjh savere…khush rahe tu sada ye dua hai meri…khush raho har khushi hai tumhaare liye…tumko mubarak sama ye suhana…rang aur noor ki baaraat kise pesh karoon…roop tera aisa darpan mein na samaaye…savere ka sooraj tumhaare liye hai…:-)

I love this song.

This is one of the top-ranked Rafi songs in my opinion. This, and the lullaby in this movie “Main gaaoon tum so jao …”, have Rafi at his finest (of course, I would say that about any Rafi song!) but his voice seems to have been at its absolute best around that time. If I were in my late teens, I would be crying too after hearing this song, it is so moving! Thanks for sharing this song.

A saying in Gujarati “Jiya na pohoche ravi theya pohoche kavi”, meaning that Kavi reaches places where even sunlight cannot reach.
Hasarat Jaipuri has proved this in this song. His entire imagination is out of this world. I like the whole song but second stanza “Ab bhi tere surks hote ke pyale” is the sublime climax of imagination converts feelings into words and I am sure no other language except urdu/hindi can achieve this.

Indeed, this song is a high class poetry, no less. With this song, Hasrat won over the masses as well as the classes.

This is my all time favourite song. Whenever I hear this song it deeply touches my heart. hats off to the gr8 singer Mr.Mohd Rafi for such a deep voice ,n to the person wrote such beautifull lyrics Mr. Hasrat Jaipuri.

Indeed, it is a song where great poetry meets great singing and great music.

This song reminds me of my childhood, because this song was everywhere, at home, streets, markets and not to mention in everyones tongue.

wat a powerful :( song sung by rafii saab

All things about this song are great. Rafi voice, Hasrat lyrics, SJ composition and Shammi performance.

An iconic and evergreen song.

Iconic song all right. This is also an all Rafi score by S-J.
Seven songs: 6 Rafi solos 1 Rafi-Suman K duet.
