Ude jab jab zulfein teri

Posted on: February 5, 2009

“Naya Daur” was quite a path breaking movie in the history of Bollywood movies.

The theme of the movie may no longer be relevant in the present day, but the theme of nation building depicted in the movie was taken very seriously those days.

And the music of this movie was quite a revelation. O P Nayyar arrived on the Bollywood music scene with this movie.

“Ude jab jab zulfein teri” was a Punjabi folk song/dance based song, and this song was perhaps the most popular song from this movie.

The song was sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. With this song, Asha Bhonsle achieved a distinct identity of her own as a playback singer and moved out of the shadow of her elder sister.

O P Nayyar, who never worked with Lata, the elder sister of Asha Bhonsle, ruled the roost for the next few years and composed some fantastic music which are remembered to this day.

Song-Ude jab jab zulfein teri (Naya daur) (1957) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

Ho ude jab jab zulfein teri
Ho ude jab jab zulfein teri
Ho ude jab jab zulfein teri
Ho ude jab jab zulfein teri
kanwariyon ke dil machle
kanwariyon ke dil machle zind meriye
ho jab aise chikne chehre
ho jab aise chikne chehre
to kaise na nazar fisle
to kaise na nazar fisle zind meriye

Ho rut pyar karan ki aayi
rut pyar karan ki aayi
ho rut pyar karan ki aayi
ho rut pyar karan ki aayi
ke beriyon ke ber pak gaye
ke beriyon ke ber pak gaye zind meriye
kabhi daal idhar bhi phera
kabhi daal idhar bhi phera
ke tak tak nain thak gaye
ke tak tak nain thak gaye zind meriye

Ho us gaaon se sanwar kabhi sadke
us gaaon se sanwar kabhi sadke
Ho us gaaon se sanwar kabhi sadke
Ho us gaaon se sanwar kabhi sadke
ke jahan mera yaar basta
ke jahan mera yaar basta zind meriye
paani lene ke bahaane aaja
ho paani lene ke bahaane aaja
ke tera mera ik rasta
ke tera mera ik rasta zind meriye

Ho tujhe chand ke bahaane dekhoon
Ho tujhe chand ke bahaane dekhoon
Ho tujhe chand ke bahaane dekhoon
Ho tujhe chand ke bahaane dekhoon
tu chhat par aaja goriye
tu chhat par aaja goriye zind meriye
Abhi chhedenge gali ke sab ladke
ho abhi chhedenge gali ke sab ladke
ke chand bairi chhip jaane de
ke chand bairi chhip jaane de zind meriye

Ho teri chaal hai naagan jaisi
Ho teri chaal hai naagan jaisi
Ho teri chaal hai naagan jaisi
Ho teri chaal hai naagan jaisi
ri jogi tujhe le jaayenge
ri jogi tujhe le jaayenge
jaayen kahin bhi magar ham sajna
jaayen kahin bhi magar ham sajna
ye dil tujhe de jaayenge
ye dil tujhe de jaayenge zind meriye

For the tune of this song OP was inspired by ‘Mainu mere dukhan ne ghereya’ the song sung by M’Rafi for the punjabi film ‘Bhaiyaji’ (1950) under the baton of Composer ‘Vinod’.

The song ‘Dil deke dagaa denge ho yaar hain matlab ke” from “Naya Daur(1957)” is the same tune as two songs from film Anil Biswas’s “Heer(1956), “Le ja uski duaayein o jo teraa ho na sakaa” (Rafi solo) and ‘aa jao tumhe ‘dil ka afsaana sunaana hai’ (Rafi-Asha duet). With only a year or less between the two films. I knew ‘Dil deke dagaa denge” , so when i heard the solo from “Heer” for the first time, it was de ja vu.

One more Rafi solo “Aana hai to aa raah mein kuch pher nahin hai” (bhajan), is still to be posted.

Dear Atul,
