Panna ki tamanna hai ki heera mujhe mil jaaye

Posted on: February 19, 2009

During 1970s, when I would try to tune radio Ceylon on wednesday night between 8 PM to 9 PM, tuning to the desired station was not as easy as it is for TV stations. There were so many radio stations on the same 25 metre band and getting a clear reception of Radio Ceylon, while avoiding voices of Voice of America, BBC etc was quite an art.

With great difficulty, one may be able to tune in, and the sound of familiar songs coming out from the radio was like a gift from heavens.

One of the familiar songs that would be coming out was this song “panna ki tamanna hai ke heera mujhe mil jaaye”.

The hold that this song had on impressionable audience ( I certainly was one) was to be seen to be believed. When I decided to post this song in the blog, I was reminded of those wednesday nights when songs like this would lead to a most memorable one hour long experience.

Just as there are “chaayageet” category of songs in this blog, I suppose I should call this song “Binaca geetmala” category of song.

Sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata, this song was very popular on the farmaishi geet programme too. Anand Bakshi was the lyricist and R D Burman the music director. Of course, Radio Ceylon announcers would not mention the lyricist and music director while playing a song in their farmaishi programme.

This song is picturised on Dev Anand and Zeenat Aman. The movie is called “Heera Panna”.

Song-Panna ki tamanna hai (Heera Panna) (1973) Singer-Lata, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

heera heera heera
panna panna panna
pannaa ki tamannaa hai ki heeraa mujhe mil jaaye
chaahe meri jaan jaaye chaahe meraa dil jaaye
ho … pannaa ki tamannaa hai ki heeraa mujhe mil jaaye
chaahe merii jaan jaaye chaahe meraa dil jaaye
hai…lo……..rararu roooo..
hai…lo……..tarara roooo…aa…
panna ki tamanna hai ki hiira mujhe mil jaaye
chahe meri jaan jaaye, chahe mera dil jaaye

heeraa to pahle hi kisi aur kaa ho chukaa
heeraa to pahle hi kisi aur kaa ho chukaa
kisi ki, madbhari, aankhon men kho chukaa
yaadon ki bas dhool ban chukaa dil kaa phool
seene pe main rakh doon jo haath phir khil jaaye
chaahe meri jaan jaaye chaahe meraa dil jaaye
ho … pannaa ki tamannaa hai ke heeraa mujhe mil jaaye
chaahe meri jaan jaaye chaahe meraa dil jaaye

dil to dete hain lete hain log kayi baar
dil to dete hain lete hain log kayi baar
huaa kyaa, kisi se, kiyaa thaa, tumne pyaar
yaadon ko chhod de, waadon ko tod de
apni jagah se kaise parbat hil jaaye
chaahe meri jaan jaaye chaahe meraa dil jaaye

la lalalalalalalala la la la la la la la…
hmm……hmm hmm..lala la la la….
bhoolaa naa mere dil ko kabhi jis kaa khayaal
bhoolaa naa mere dil ko kabhii jis kaa khayaal
ho sake, to use, mere dil se tu nikaal
haha
naa karoon main ye kaam to nahin meraa naam
naa karoon main ye kaam to nahin meraa naam
baaton se ye zakhme-jigar kaise sil jaaye
chaahe meri jaan jaaye chaahe meraa dil jaaye
ho … pannaa ki tamannaa hai ki heeraa mujhe mil jaaye
chaahe meri jaan jaaye chaahe meraa dil jaaye
hoi…lo……..tarara roooo…
hoi…lo……..tarara roooo…

a la la la …..
heera heera heera heera
heera heera heera heera
la la la la …..
la la la la ….
heera heera heera heera
heera heera heera heera
la la la la …..

Hi Atul,

Panna ki tamanna hai is definitely among my special list of RD-Navketan songs. Songs of this film had a feel-good factor , which has persisted till today. Hearing any song of Heera Panna has a very nice soothing touch to it.

Thanks for covering this song. A gem really.

Thank you! I left India in 1974. All the songs up to that period sound great.
Keep up the good work.

I too live abroad ,since ’81 ,and all these great songs, bring nostalgic memories!
