Zara sa jhoom loon main

Posted on: June 26, 2009

Here is a new song . Yes, this song is from “Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge” (1995) which is just 14 years old which is as good as just off the press by the standards of this blog.

This song is one of those rare songs of 1990s which remained popular and was not forgotten immediately, as was the fate of most songs of 1990s. In fact, almost all the songs of this movie have gone on to become memorable songs. Yes, even I find them nice memorable songs.

This song “Zara sa jhoom loon main” is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Abhijeet and it is picturised on Kajol and Shahrukh Khan.

One main reason why the movie became evergreen could be attributed to the fact that lyrics were written by that vereran lyricist Anand Bakshi who was still around in 1990s. Another reason was that Jatin Lalit’s music was almost a harb back to the the music of the golden era. It could well have been Kalyanji Anandji or Laxmikant Pyarelal composing music.

Like Kalyanji Anandji, Jatin and Lalit are brothers. It is interesting to note that they are the nephews of Pt Jasraj and brothers of Sulakshana Pandit and Vijayeta Pandit. Their music in this movie certainly has the longevity of yesteryears.

If I have any grouse about tjis song, then it is about the choice of female singer. Asha Bhonsle’s voice clearly shows the signs of age. Her voice sounds tired and laboured whereas she would have made short work of this song just one decades earlier. Asha Bhonsle and Lata should not have accepted new assignments to sing in Bolywood. It is painful to see voices like theirs struggling in these songs. I would like to remember then for the thousands of great songs that they sung during their heydays rather than for these few songs where they are so clearly over the hill.

zaraa saa ghoom loon main
are na re na re na
aa tujhe choom loon main
are na re baabaa na

zaraa saa ghoom loon main
are na re na re na
aa tujhe choom loon main
are na re baabaa na

jaati hai tu kahaan jaan-e-man jaan-e-jaan
ladki hai tu khoobsoorat ladkaa main naujawaan
tujhe gale lagaa loon aa
palkon mein bithaa loon aa
ho gayaa mujhe nashaa
rabba mere mainu bachaa
zaraa saa jhoom loon main
na re na re na
zaraa saa ghoom loon main
are na re na re na
aa tujhe choom loon main
na re baabaa na
ho gayaa mujhe nashaa
rabba mere mainnu bachaa
