atul's bollywood song a day- with full lyrics

Kaun ho tum kaun ho

Posted on: June 29, 2009

This song from “Stree” (1961) comes as a whiff of fresh air to me. It is so refreshing to see a Bollywood song from a lyricist who knew the topics he was writing about. Bharat Vyas, who mostly wrote songs in mythological movies, knew his mythology well. Moreover, he was one of the few lyricists at that time (Pradeep being the other) who used textbook Hindi words in their lyrics.

It is so pleasant to listen to words like “Ritu” (season), “Madhurim” (sweet), “kalpana” (imagination), “pratham” (first), “pranay” (love). It makes for such a refreshing change from the usual words that were used in majority of songs those days.

It is a superb semi classical song, composed by C Ramchandra and sung by Mahendra Kapoor.

This song had two parts- viz “Milan” (union) and “viyoog” (separation). The part posted here is the happy viz “milan” part of the song.

Song-Kaun ho tum kaun ho (Stree) (1961) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-C Ramchandra

Lyrics

kaun ho tum kaun ho
kaun ho tum kaun ho
kaun ho

kavi ki madhur kalpnaa ho tum
yaa gaayak ki madhurim taan

ritu basant ki pratham kali ho
saawan ki pahli barsaat
yaa chir virahi do hridayon ke
yaa chir virahi do hridayon ke
madhur milan ki pahli raat

kaun ho tum, kaun ho
kaun ho tum, kaun ho
kaun ho

pranay geet ki pratham pankti ho
yaa manu ki pahli santaan
pranay geet ki pratham pankti ho
yaa manu ki pahli santaan
nav yauvan ki pratham drishti ho
naynon ki pahli pahchaan

kaun ho tum, kaun ho
kaun ho tum, kaun ho
kaun ho

Very nice to listen to pure Hindi.
I do not know many songs like this.

I came to see how many songs from Stree were included. I see four here, there must be more. In any case, looking at this song, I thought I’ll take a shot at translating the lyrics. They are of course, so easy to understand. yet, I had som edifficulty with the last verse. I’d welcome any changes to make it better.

Who are you, who are you, who!

You are the poet’s pleasant imagination,
or the sweet melody of a singer?
or perhaps the lilting wave in a pond,
or the smile of blossoming lotus!

Who are you, who are you, who!

You must be the first bloom of the spring season,
Or the first showers of the moonth of Sravan,
Or the first night of the sweet union of two long-separated hearts.

Who are you, who are you, who!

You are the first line of a love song,
Or the Creator’s first born
Or the first romantic look of a youth
The first introduction between two pairs of eyes

Who are you, who are you, who!
