O matwaare saajnaa chhalak gayaa meraa pyaar

Posted on: July 4, 2009

These days, when people go on a long drive in cars, they switch on their car music system and enjoy listeneing to music. But that was not always the case. In olden days, when mp3 players and cassette players were not invented, keeping a record player in the car was not a viable option.

So what would they do in Bollywood ? The car driver, as soon as he was seated behind the steering wheel, would switch on the car /jeep as well as his vocal chords, and start singing songs. In case the car driver was of reticent type, it is the passenger who would burst into a song.

What about Bollywood movies whose stories were based in mythological times ? There were no cars then, but they had bullock carts, horses, chariots etc. So the same principle was applicable.

So here is this Arabian nights kind of a movie called “Faulaad”(1963) and our macho hero Dara Singh is driving a chariot. He is not the singing type as we all know, so the onus of singing falls upon his co passenger seated on the passenger seat er bench-the one and only Mumtaz. And she sings this lovely song “O matwaare saajnaa chhalak gayaa mera pyaar”. And as we can see, the chariotway is empty with no other traffic to be seen. Driving ( and singing) in such empty roads, and getting to listen to a song must be bliss for Dara Singh.

How I wish that modern day wives, seated beside their husbands, would similarly sing songs instead of haranguing their husbands on their driving.

Song-O matwaare saajnaa chhalak gayaa meraa pyaar (Faulaad) (1963) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Farooque Qaisar, MD-G S Kohli

Lyrics

o matwaare saajna
o matwaare saajna chalak gaya mera pyaar
dil dhadke main kyaa karoon huaa ye pahli baar
ho o matwaare saajnaa

ho o o
ho o o
aa aa
phoolon se rang le liyaa
kaliyon se ye roop
phoolon se rang le liyaa
ho phoolon se rang le liyaa
kaliyon se ye roop
chaaon lena pyaar ki aur badhti jaaye dhoop
din jaan jaan kar mat gumaan kar saajna
o matwaare saajna

thaame dil ko le chala
armaaon ka josh
thaame dil ko le chala
ho thaame dil ko le chala
armaaon ka josh
aage aage main chali aur peechhe peechhe wo
ya saroor hai ya garoor hai kuch zaroor hai saajnaa
o matwaare saajna chalak gaya mera pyaar
dil dhadke main kya karoon hua ye pahli baar
ho o matwaare saajnaa
aaa aaa
aaa aaa
