Kitna haseen hai mausam kitna haseen safar hai

Posted on: July 20, 2009

How the songs of “Azaad” (1955) were composed in an interesting tale in itself.

The producer S H S Naidu approached Naushad to compose music for this movie, but the condition was quite stringent. He wanted all the 9 songs recorded in one month ! Naushad refused. Other leading music directors were approached and they too refused. Then C Ramchandra was approached and he accepted the challenge. He successfully recorded all the songs within the target and he did a great job too. All the songs of this movie became very popular. In fact these songs are remembered even today.

Recording these songs was not a plain sailing . considering the time constraint. Those days Talat Mahmood used to give playback for Dilip Kumar, and accordingly C Ramchandra created the tune for a duet which Talat Mahmood and Lata were to sing, but Talat Mahmood was unable to give dates for recording.

One fine day this song got recorded. When lyricist Shailendra heard the recording, he confidently said that the male voice was Talat Mahmood’s whereas C Ramchandra stated that he was unable to get Talat Mahmood’s dates for recording. Shailendra bet Rs 100 ( a big sum those days) that the song was sung by Talat Mahmood.

Indeed, the song sounds so much like Talat Mahmood as was originally intended, but Shailendra lost the bet as the male voice was not Talat Mahmood’s but that of C Ramchandra himself ! And what a superb job he did in singing like Talat Mahmood !

Here is this superbly sung duet from “Azaad”. It was picturised on Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari. Rajinder Krishan was the lyricist.

Song-Kitna haseen hai mausam (Azaad) (1955) Singers-C Ramchandra, Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD- C Ramchandra

Lyrics

kitna haseen hai mausam
kitna haseen safar hai
saathi hai khoobsoorat
ye mausam ko bhi khabar hai
kitna haseen hai mausam
kitna haseen safar hai
saathi hai khoobsoorat
ye mausam ko bhi khabar hai

milti nahin hai manzil, raahi jo ho akelaa
do ho to phir jahaan bhi, chaahe lagaa lo melaa
dil mil gaye to phir kyaa, jangal bhi ek ghar hai
saathi hai khoobsoorat, ye mausam ko bhi khabar hai
kitna haseen hai mausam
kitna haseen safar hai
saathi hai khoobsoorat
ye mausam ko bhi khabar hai

naa jaane ye hawaayen kyaa kahnaa chaahti hain
naa jaane ye hawaayen kyaa kahnaa chaahti hain
panchhi teri sadaayen kyaa kahnaa chaahati hain
panchhi teri sadaayen kyaa kahnaa chaahati hain
kuchh to hai aaj jiskaa, har cheez par asar hai
saathi hai khoobsoorat, ye mausam ko bhi khabar hai
kitna haseen hai mausam
kitna haseen safar hai
saathi hai khoobsoorat
ye mausam ko bhi khabar hai

kudrat ye kah rahi hai, aa dil se dil milaa le
ulfat se aag lekar, dil ka diyaa jalaale
sachchi agar lagan hai, phir kiskaa tujhko dar hai
saathi hai khoobsoorat, ye mausam ko bhi khabar hai
kitna haseen hai mausam
kitna haseen safar hai
saathi hai khoobsoorat
ye mausam ko bhi khabar hai

Er, Atul, this song is filmed on Dilip Kumar and Meena kumari. You probably did not recognize her because she is so young and joyful here.

Yes, it is Meena Kumari. It was absent mindedness on my part. I am a fan of Meena Kumari during her youthful days when she used to play happy roles.
