Marne ki duaayen kyun maangoon

Posted on: August 5, 2009

I realised belatedly that 4 August is the birthday of Kishore Kumar, the much beloved multi faceted genius of Bollywood.

Today, one day later, here is this song sung by Kishore Kumar. It is a very special song indeed. This song in fact is the very first song that Kishore Kumar sang in a movie. The movie is “Ziddi” (1948) and the song is “marne ki duaayen kyun maangoon, jeeni ki tamanna kaun kare”. This song is written by Prof Jazbi. The music director is Khemchand Prakash and I, along with millions of music lovers will forever remain indebted to Khemchand Prakash for giving Kishore kumar his first break.

This song is picturised, rather appropriately, on Dev Anand.

Kishore Kumar, who was a big fan of K L saigal ( who was not ?) sings this song is K l Saigal style, though one can see signs of his original voice too, which would come out in his singing in coming years.

So here is this immortal song sung by an imortal singer.

Song-Marne ki duaayen kyun maangoon (Ziddi) (1948) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Prof Jazbi, MD- Khemchand Prakash

Lyrics

marne ki duaayen kyun maangoon
jeene ki tamannaa kaun kare,
kaun kare
ye duniyaa ho yaa wo duniyaa,
ab khwaahish-e-duniyaa kaun kare, kaun kare
marne ki duaayen kyun maangoon

jo aag lagaayi thi tumne
jo aag lagaayi thi tumne
usko to bujhaayaa ashkon ne
usko to bujhaayaa ashkon ne
jo ashkon ne bhadkaayi hai,
us aag ko thandaa kaun kare, kaun kare
us aag ko thandaa kaun kare, kaun kare
marne ki duaayen kyun maangoon

jab kashti saabit-o-saalim thi
jab kashti saabit-o-saalim thi
saahil ki tamannaa kisko thi
saahil ki tamannaa kisko thi
ab aish shikashtaa kashti par
saahil ki tamannaa kaun kare, kaun kare
saahil ki tamannaa kaun kare, kaun kare
marne ki duaayen kyun maangoon

i have become great fan of hindi film songs only after listening to Kishore songs. Thanks Atul for posting his first song.

[...] have already discussed a couple of songs from this movie which Kishore Kumar’s first song Marne ki duaayen kyun mangoon as well as Lata’s song Chanda re ja re ja [...]

Atul, one of the other tags you could have is FIRST SONG, this list could have the first songs for all singers / lyricists / music directors :) .

Yes, it is a good idea for a tag.

:) .

hey all Atulites
Its curtains for the Evergreen style Icon of All times. y is god taking away all our favourites—- first Shammi Kapoor now Dev Anand .
May his soul rest in peace.

I just read the news. He will be missed by millions of his fans. I remember him saying “I have always believed and lived my life like – Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya, Har Fikara Ko Dhooen Me Oodata Chala Gaya” during hi TV interview when he published his autobiography. A big loss to the Hindi Cinema.

The credit titles in the film shows Anil Biswas as Music director of this film
The reason is not known The actual MD is Khemchand Prakash is true.

Damani ji,
Anil Biswas gave music to only 3 films in 1948,namely Veena-Gajre and Anokha pyar. So there is no question of his being the MD for Ziddi at all.
Also it was a known fact that K-Prakash gave Kishore Kumar his first break in playback singing.
I am surprised how the Credits can show A.Biswas as the MD.

The Film was ready for release in 1946 but was released only in 1948 for the reason best known to the Producer

Thanks for the reply Arunji. I entirely agree with you and surprised too. Hence this posting If any body can throw light .
