Bijli giri kahaan se

Posted on: August 20, 2009

Among lesser known music directors, S Mohinder will always occupy a pride of place. He did not get too many opportunities to show his ability, but he made the most of whatever little opportunities he got as a music director.

These days, I have been posting songs from an obscure movie “Picnic” (1966) whose music was composed by S Mohinder.

Just listen to this song and tell me if this song should not rank among timeless classics. What a remarkable song this is. written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and sung by Rafi, this must be among one of the valuable gems of this genre of songs namely sad songs.

Amazing lyrics, heart rending rendition, music that is just perfect for the occasion, what more does a song need ! It is a remarkable song indeed.

Song-Bijli giri kahaan se (Picnic) (1966) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-S Mohinder

Lyrics

Bijli giri kahaan se
bijli giri kahaan se
begaane ho gaye ham
apne hi aashiyaan se
bijli giri kahaan se

ghoonghat mein jal rahi hai
meri jawaan bahaarein
armaan kise pukaaren
armaan kise pukaaren
ghoonghat mein jal rahi hai
meri jawaan bahaarein
armaan kise pukaaren
armaan kise pukaaren
ham kyaa kahen jabaan se
bijli giri kahaan se
begaane ho gaye ham
apne hi aashiyaan se
bijli giri kahaan se

aankhon mein pyaar roya
sapnon ne di duhaayi
aawaaz tak na aayi
aawaaz tak na aayi
aankhon mein pyaar roya
sapnon ne di duhaayi
aawaaz tak na aayi
aawaaz tak na aayi
wo chal diye yahaan se
bijli giri kahaan se
begaane ho gaye ham
apne hi aashiyaan se
bijli giri kahaan se

phoolon pe chalke aaye
kaanton mein nikli manzil
ye kyaa huaa mere dil
ye kyaa huaa mere dil
phoolon pe chalke aaye
kaanton mein nikli manzil
ye kyaa huaa mere dil
ye kyaa huaa mere dil
toofaan utha kahaan se
bijli giri kahaan se
begaane ho gaye ham
apne hi aashiyaan se
bijli giri kahaan se

I am in the middle of another film with music by S Mohinder (Shirin Farhad)…lovely songs :-) And I loved his music from Reporter Raju (including my theme song!)…

Like Ganesh, S Mohinder could not create a bad song even if wanted to.

I just read in youtube this song was picturised on Anand bakshi
(who acted in the film as a FAKHIR)
(Anand Bakshiji`s son Rakesh bakshi mentioned that in his channel under YOUTUBE).
Azra,David Abraham are the actors besides Anand Bakshi, are there in the song picturisation.
As per Rakesh Bakshi, Manoj kumar(hero of the movie PICNIC) offered this role to him.
“Song written by Majrooh Sultanpuri lip synced by Anand Bakshi.”
But the video link of the song in our blog is missing.

Prakash ji,

Well, I do have the disc of this film, and i just viewed this song again. The person singing this song on screen is wearing a thick beard and moustache. Most of this song has the camera focused on Azra. It is her wedding night, and Manoj Kumar has just rejected her, and explained to her that he married her just to teach a lesson to his parents, for forcing him to marry against his wishes. After this dialogue, he walks out of the room, and Azra walks out to the balconny. A strom is raging outside, and a lone bearded ‘fakir’ is out there singing this song. Most of the time the camera is on Azra during this song, with a couple of shots of David. The singer has very little screen-time in this song, and there is just one good face close up.

And yes, it is Anand Bakshi.

PS: Also just checked Greta Memsaab’s blog, there is a guest post about Anand Bakshi, by his son Rakesh Bakshi. The post mentions this song, and includes a close up still shot of Anand Bakshi with the beard, which is the same as I saw on the disk just few minutes before.

Sudhir bhai

Love you for your response

thank you
