atul's bollywood song a day- with full lyrics

Door papeehaa bolaa raat aadhi rah gayi

Posted on: January 27, 2010

I was not aware about this movie called “Gajre” (1948) nor about this song.

I heard this song for the first time only yesterday. This song is written by Gopal Singh Nepali who was a leading poet at that time. In fact, he was one of the few Hindi poets who tried out their hands in writing movie lyrics in Bollywood movies. He in fact had a reasonable innings as a lyricist.

The song is sung by Suraiyya, though it does sound a bit like Meena Kapoor’s voice too, sometimes. I guess that this song was picturised on Suraiyya herself.

Anil Biswas is the music director.

What a lovely song ! This song sounds to my ears like a timeless song. Listening to this song, it feels like I am magically trasported back to 1948, some 62 years back- to an era which was way before I was even born. That indeed is what a timeless song is all about.

Song-Door papeehaa bolaa (Gajre) (1948) Singer-Suraiyya, Lyrics-Gopal Singh Nepali, MD-Anil Biswas

Lyrics

door papeehaa bolaa raat aadhi rah gayi
meri tumhaari mulaaqaat baaqi rah gayi
door papeehaa bolaa raat aadhi rah gayi
meri tumhaari mulaaqaat baaqi rah gayi

meraa man hai udaas jiyaa mand-mand hai
meraa man hai udaas jiyaa mand-mand hai
baadalon ke ghere mein chaand nazarband hai
baadalon ke ghere mein chaand nazarband hai
baadal aaye par barsaat baaqi rah gayi
baadal aaye par barsaat baaqi rah gayi
meri tumhaari mulaaqaat baaqi rah gayi
door papeehaa bolaa

aankh michauli kheli, jhoolaa jhoom ke jhoole
aankh michauli kheli, jhoolaa jhoom ke jhoole
ban mein chameli phooli ham bahaar mein bhoole
ham bahaar mein bhoole
par deni thi jo saugaat baaqi rah gayi
par deni thi jo saugaat baaqi rah gayi
meri tumhaari mulaaqaat baaqi rah gayi
door papeehaa bolaa raat aadhi rah gayi
meri tumhaari mulaaqaat baaqi rah gayi
door papeehaa bolaa

Suraiya was in the lead role in film Gajre and the song is indeed sung by herself.I still hear this song frequently, its Gem of a song. There is another versatile song of the same film sung by Lata mangeshkar ” Baras baras badli bhi bikhar gaye, aab kaab aoge balama aab kaab aaoge balama”
Anil Biswas was the music director who taught Lataji the technic of playback singing. He showed her where to leave breath and where to take in a breath. I have carefully heard hundreds of songs of Lataji and can only single out 2 songs where the hiss of her taking breath is audible. One is from Barsat ” Ho Ho Muje kise se pyaar
ho ga, pyaar ho gaya dil beqarar ho gaya” Anilda is GREAT

Suraiya is actually rather underrated as a singer. She was actually very impressive in this department, though she didn’t consider herself much of a singer at all.

Here’s a playlist of some of the choicest songs of Suraiya:-

I am astonished by the lovely quality of her voice and the expression she is able to infuse in a wide variety of song types. No wonder she was the highest paid female star in her heydays.
