Zindagi imtihaan leti hai

Posted on: June 18, 2010

“Naseeb” (1981) is a movie that came when the golden era of the Bollywood movie was coming to an end. This movie, and especially the songs in this movie symbolises this fact.

I had posted a song from this movie in the past. That song was sung by Rafi and it was picturised on Amitabh Bachchan. The song under discussion too is picturised on Amitabh Bachchan (and others) and the voice singing for Amitabh Bachchan bears some resemblence to Rafi’s voice, but it is not Rafi. The voice is that of Anwar who was asked to sing this song since Rafi had in the meanwhile passed away. The other voice singing for Shatrughan Sinha sounds like Mukesh. That too is not Mukesh (who had passed away a few years ago). That singer is Dr Kamlesh Awasthi. This song has a female voice too (singing for Reena Roy) that sounds like Lata, but it is not Lata but Suman Kalyanpur. Yes, this is that kind of a song where clones of Rafi,Mukesh and Lata sing the song. Of course, Suman Kalyanpur to my mind was an outstanding singer on her own right.

The song itself is a lovely song to listen to. It is written by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The song is picturised as a party song where Amitabh Bachchan, Reena Roy and Shatrughan Sinha are shown partying and singing.

Towards the end of the song, where the song takes a slower and sadder turn, one can see Hema Malini too in the picturisation.

This song is posted on the farmaish of Dr Mohan Doshi, a new regular of this blog.

Song-Zindagi imtehaan leti hai (Naseeb) (1981) Singers-Suman Kalyanpur, Anwar, Kamlesh Awasthi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

Zindagi imtihaan leti hai
zindagi imtihaan leti hai
logon ki jaan,
logon ki jaan,
logon ki jaan leti hai
dillagi imtihaan leti hai
dillagi imtihaan leti hai
diljalon ki jaan,
diljalon ki jaan,
diljalon ki jaan leti hai
dosti imtihaan leti hai
dosti imtihaan leti hai
doston ki jaan,
doston ki jaan,
doston ki jaan leti hai
zindagi imtihaan leti hai
dillagi imtihaan leti hai
dosti imtihaan leti hai

uss bekhabar ko koi khabar de
uss bekhabar ko koi khabar de
ke ye pyaar ham ko paagal na kar de
ye pyaar ham ko paagal na kar de
preet bhi imtihaan leti hai
preet bhi imtihaan leti hai
premiyon ki jaan,
premiyon ki jaan,
premiyon ki jaan leti hai
zindagi imtihaan leti hai
zindagi imtihaan leti hai

dil ki gali se bach ke guzarna
dil ki gali se bach ke guzarna
yeh soch lena phir pyaar karna
yeh soch lena phir pyaar karna
aashiqui imtihaan leti hai
aashiqui imtihaan leti hai
aashiqon ki jaan,
aashiqon ki jaan,
aashiqon ki jaan leti hai
dosti imtihaan leti hai
dosti imtihaan leti hai

saari naseebon ki hain kharaabi
saari naseebon ki hain kharaabi
ye hamne jaana banke sharaabi
ye hamne jaana banke sharaabi
maykashi imtihaan leti hai
maykashi imtihaan leti hai
maykashon ki jaan,
maykashon ki jaan,
maykashon ki jaan leti hai haay
zindagi imtihaan leti hai
zindagi imtihaan leti hai

dil ki gali se bach ke guzarna
dil ki gali se bach ke guzarna
ye soch lena phir pyaar karna
ye soch lena phir pyaar karna
aashiqui imtihaan leti hai
aashiqui imtihaan leti hai

Typical Manmohan Desai movie. “Amitabh” in a lead with excellent supporting cast. Movie full of action, drama, comedy, & songs.

For song, I must say unique choice of singers by MD LP ji. And, nicely penned by “Anand Bakshi”

“Kamlesh Awasthi” also sang “Tera Saath Hai to kya kami hai” in “Pyaasa Sawan” for LP ji. Though, Lata version was more popular.

I don’t think that Heam Malini was there in the end of this song, I have seen this movie many times but fail to see Hema.

One of the big causes of Amitabh’s downfall seems to be singers like Anwar and Mohd Aziz, who couldn’t hold a candle to Rafi. Of course Awasthi’s attempt to ape Mukesh just highlights the chasm between the quality of the 2 singers. I have so many times wished that this song was sung by some better male singers, someone who would not let the writer, music director and Suman Kalyanpur die.

For the person who didn’t see Hema despite sing movie several times, I want to say….actually I don’t even have words for that :)

all singers at that time were divine, but actors were no longer young to play supermen and romeos, time of friendship and hera pheri was just out, no more sholay hai, ram balram or suhag hai, it was the end.. Even that, we still adore them , they are all what we love.

I must say I only found out yesterday that Amitabh’s voice was sung by Anwar. I am also told that Anwar is still alive but a ‘nobody’ now – he has lost his fame and fortune and apparently turned into an alcoholic and even came to the UK seeking work and ended up working in restaurants. But then returned to India. It is such a pity that such talented people do not make more use of their talents.
But it is an awesome song and the film is one the best films Indian cinema has seen.
Pity they don’t make these films anymore and pity Amitabh cannot tuen the clock back to the days of the ‘angry’ young man. Nevertheless he has given us more memories to remember.
