Kaise rahoon chup ke maine pi hi kyaa hai

In Bollywood movies, getting drunk and singing drunkard song was considered the preserve of males (viz Devdas etc). Ladies getting drunk and making a spectacle of themselves was a strict no no.
But in 1960s, Bollywood movies tried to break this stereotype. We saw Waheeda Rehman singing a drunkard song in “Guide” (1965) and a few more songs followed.
Here is a drunkard song from “Inteqaam”. Here we find Sadhana getting drunk and singing a song in a party, much to the embarassment of Sanjay Khan. The song is sung by Lata, and it is a very well known song too.
Lyrics by Rajinder Krishan has to be the main reason why this song is so well known among music lovers. And Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music does the rest.
The picturisation of the song shows, apart from Sadhana (looking pretty in her red sari) and Sanjay Khan, some of the most well known support cast in Bollywood history, viz Ashok Kumar, Rajendranath, Jeewan,Asit Sen,Rehman etc.
Here is this wonderful party cum drunkard song with a difference.

I think ladies got drunk on purpose with the goal of making a strong statement. I’ve seen that in the movies and also in people’s (Indians) private lives. So really, the movie people were not breaking stereotypes so much as using them.
Sadhna looks lovely in scarlet–it’s a color Indian women carry off very well (note to self).

Sadhana was much better in looks in early 60’s (B&W movies). She was OK in this movie … may be it’s just me 🙂
In terms of popularity and quality, I think Lata & LP combination was unbeatable in late 60’s & 70’s. This song must be very popular those days. Made it to the TOP in Binaca geetmala that year beating following popular gems:

My friends and I used to enjoy singing this song in those days, esp the hiccup part, where we used to compete to produce the biggest and the best hiccups! We used to wonder how Lata produced those hiccups, and of course, those were the days when someone told us that having an aspirin with a glass of Coke would be like having a drink, so we tried that too while singing this song! Lata was definitely at her peak with LP in those days. Thanks, Atul!
I didn’t see the movie but certainly Sadhana had lost her earlier charm and looks by then.

Sophy, Indian ladies may be able to carry off scarlet well, if you ask most Indian men, they will only be able to identify it as red. 🙂
Sid, LP songs were number 1 in Binaca geetmala in every year from 1967 to 1970.

1967 – Saawan ka mahina pawan (Milan) –> Lata/Mukesh
1968 – Dil wil pyar vyar (Shagird) –> Lata
1969 – Kaise rahoon chup ki (Inteqam) –> Lata

Despite being a no 1 song at Binaca Geet Mala, i rarely saw it on DD or heard it on AIR during 80s and 90s- was it due to some self moralising (ladies dont drink- bad influence on kids!)

If it is fine for men to drink.. guess it is fine for women to drink. Drinking addiction is not good, whether it is men or a women.

Ever the ladies’ man, right? Chalo, koi baat nahin…ye ilzaam bhi sar pe le lete hain. 🙂 I can now say “aapke anurodh pe main ye translation karta hoon…”. 🙂
