Chaahe to moraa jiyaa lai le saanwariyaa

Posted on: June 27, 2010

I have posted many songs from “Mamtaa” (1966) by now, but I still keep discovering “new” songs in this movie. Here is another “new” song (for me) though it is not new for others like my regular visitors and farmaish senders.

This song is a long pending farmaish of Lalitha, which obviously means that she was aware of this song, while I was not. This song is a mujra song, sung by Lata and picturised on Suchitra Sen. The song itself is nice to listen to, but I found the picturisation an eyesore. I do not think Suchitra Sen looks very natural or comfortable in this role as a tawaif. A Waheeda Rehman or Rekha was the demand of this song, and Suchitra Sen is ill at ease here in this picturisation.

The song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by Roshan. So here it is, the sixth song from “Mamtaa” to make it to this blog, with more to follow.

Song-Chaahe to mora jiyaa lai le saanwariyaa (Mamtaa) (1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

aaa aaa aaa
hamne unke saamne
pahle to khanzar rakh diyaa
haan
phir kalejaa rakh diyaa
dil rakh diyaa
sar rakh diyaa
aur kahaa

ho
chaahe to mora jiyaa lai le saanwariyaa
chaahe to mora jiyaa lai le
pher ke nainaa naa jaa
naa jaa
main waari rasiyaa aaa
ho
chaahe to mora jiyaa lai le saanwariyaa
chaahe to mora jiyaa lai le

waah waah munnibai
jawaaab nahin hai tumhaaraa
subhaan allaah
subhaan allaah
marhaba marhaba

maan bhi jaao na
chodo larchaiyaan
chodo larchaiyaan
maan bhi jaao na
chodo larchaiyaan
chodo larchaiyaan
jaane naa doongi
jaane naa doongi main
dekho more sainyya
dekho more sainyya
rok rahi gori bainyaa
ke ruk jaa o manbasiyaa aaa
ho
Chaahe to mora jiyaa lai le saanwariyaa
Chaahe to mora jiyaa lai le

aayinaa hai ke hai qaatil ke muqaabil qaatil
mujhe dar hai kahin lad jaaye naa qaatil kaa dil

Atul, the period from about ’63 to about ’69 was the period when I was really crazy about these songs and I would actually sit and write down the lyrics of these songs and fill up all the unused pages in the notebooks left over from the previous year. Many years later, my mother found all these notebooks when she was trying to throw out all the old stuff and she was surprised to find out that I was writing down lyrics of songs when I was supposed to be studying! I used to also buy the song books which were being sold at a small pan beedi shop on my way to the bus stop! Anyway, that is how I am familiar with so many songs of that period!

Thanks for the song, Atul, and yes, I agree that Suchitra Sen does not make a great tawaif. On the other hand, I am sure there were some matronly tawaifs around, all of them couldn’t have been as attractive as Rekha or Waheeda!

Hahaha, I too had a diary (a govt of India diary of 1974) in which I wrote down the lyrics of songs that I liked during those days. Since listening to songs was possible only on radio, so I needed that song to be played several times before I could get the lyrics of that song right. I still have that diary with me.
