Main rickshaw waalaa main rickshaw waalaa

Posted on: July 19, 2010

Recently I posted a hand rickshaw song in this blog. That song was from “Dil Tera Deewaanaa”.

In the comments of that song, it was mentioned by Lalitha that there was another hand rickshaw song in the movie “Chhoti Behan” and she gave that song as her farmaish.

When I searched for this song and finally found it, I found that the same team that had created the “Dil Tera Deewaana” song had created this song too. Yes, Rafi is the singer, Shailendra is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music. And both these songs have been picturised on Mehmood. The only dissimilarity is that the “Dil Tera Deewaanaa” song is a stage song and that had Shubha Khote as Mehmood’s passenger, and here this rickshaw is pulled on the roads with other passengers.

The lyrics are wonderful and Rafi has sung this song with his characteristic enthusiasm. I have heard this song in the past, but I was not aware about the details of this song. It is only just now that I have come to know that this song is from “Chhoti Behan”.

So here is this wonderful Cycle rickshaw song from “Chhoti Behan” (1959). And I must say that Mehmood was an expert in hauling this hand rickshaw, as can be seen from this picturisation as well as the picturisation in the “Dil Tera Deewaanaa” song. It is real back breaking work to pull a hand rickshaw. Pedallinga ycle rickshaw is a cakewalk in comparison. I can only sympathise with all those hand rickshaw pullers who used this hand rickshaw for their livelihood in the past generations.

Any idea where this song was picturised ? It could well in locations at Bombay, but I am not sure.

Song-Main rickshaw waalaa main rickshaw waala (Chhoti Behan) (1959) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics- Shailendra,MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

Main rickshaw waalaa
main rickshaw walla
hai chaar ke baraabar
ye do taang waalaa
kahaan chaloge babu
kahaan chaloge lala
kahaan chaloge babu
kahaan chaloge lala
main rickshaw walla
main rickshaw walla

door door door koyi
mujhko bulaaye
mujhko bulaaye
kyaa karoon dil usse
bhool na paaye
bhool na paaye
main rishte jodoon dil ke
mujhe hi manzil pe
koyi na pahunchaaye
koyi na pahu.nchaaye
main rickshaw walla
main rickshaw walla
hai chaar ke baraabar
ye do taang waalaa
kahaan chaloge babu
kahaan chaloge lala
kahaan chaloge babu
kahaan chaloge lala
main rickshaw walla
main rickshaw walla

thi kabhi chaand tak
apni udaan
apni udaan
ab ye dhool ye sadak
apnaa jahaan
apnaa jahaan
jo koyi dekhe chaunke
uparwaalaa bhi soche
ye kaisaa insaan
ye kaisaa insaan
main rickshaw walla
main rickshaw walla
hai chaar ke baraabar
ye do taang waalaa
kahaan chaloge babu
kahaan chaloge lala
kahaan chaloge babu
kahaan chaloge lala
main rickshaw walla
main rickshaw walla

raat din har ghadi
ek sawaal
ek sawaal
rotiyaan kam hain kyun
kyun hai akaal
kyun hai akaal
kyun duniyaa mein kami hai
ye chori kisne ki hai
kahaan hai saaraa maal
kahaan hai saaraa maal
main rickshaw walla
main rickshaw walla
hai chaar ke baraabar
ye do taang waalaa
kahaan chaloge babu
kahaan chaloge lala
kahaan chaloge babu
kahaan chaloge lala
main rickshaw walla
main rickshaw walla

hi atul
going by the locales it can be bangalore of old times. but isn’t Choti Bahen a Madras made movie. so the locales could also be Madras(Chennai now).
but i am sure our dear Greta will enlighten us

I don’t think this was filmed in Madras, because I don’t recognize any of the buildings. On the other hand, when I go to Madras now, it bears little resemblance, if any, to the Madras of my childhood days!

I thought I saw Marine Drive at one point, or at least the wall, but there were trees on the other side and no houses. It doesn’t resemble Bangalore, either, to me. Could this be Poona (Pune now)?

Thanks for the song, Atul! Incidentally, I noticed that towards the end of the song, he is plying a cycle rickshaw, so it looks like he made enough money to be able to buy himself a cycle rickshaw. Good for him!

Yes, I too noticed a cycle rickshaw plying towards the end of the song. Perhaps the movie makers inserted this scene hoping that the movie watchers will not notice this incongruity.

Rafi’s voice is superb in the song. I had this song in 78 rpm and this was one of the biggest hits of 1959.
