Bahaar aayi magar dil ke phool khil na sake

Posted on: October 7, 2010

It is my recent resolution to post as many Sajjad Hussain songs as I can find. Considering that Sajjad Hussain composed approximately one hundred songs and I have so far discussed 19 songs composed by Sajjad Hussain, it should take me nearly three months to cover the remaining Sajjad Hussain songs not yet discussed. In other words, I hope to cover all the Sajjad Hussain compositions by the time this year 2010 comes to a close. That would be a nice little achievement for this blog to have all Sajjad Hussain songs in one place.

Here is another Sajjad Hussain composition. This song is from “Halchal” (1951). This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Nargis. Khumar Barabankwi is the lyricist.

What can one say about this song ! My self-coined term “mental massage” comes to my mind. Listening to this song relaxes your mind and calms your nerves. Yes, this song has that kind of therapeutic effect on your mind.

Of all the songs composed by Sajjad Hussain, this song can well be called one of the best ever ! To imagine that Sajjad Hussain was not being allowed to work in peace in this movie by Dilip Kumar who was interfering in his work. So much so that Sajjad Hussain could not take in any longer and walked out of the assignment in a huff. Just imagine that a composer has to take this step after creating one of his best compositions ever ! But that is how it often happens in life. This happened with Sajjad Hussain on quite a few occasions and he missed out on many assignments as a result. Music lovers were the losers as a result.

Whenever one is in need of mental peace, one should listen to this song. That is all one needs to do.

Song-Bahaar aayi magar dil ke phool khil na sake (Halchal) (1951) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Khumar Barabankwi, MD-Sajjad Hussain

Lyrics

bahaar aayi magar
dil ke phool khil na sake ae ae
ham unko paa ke bhi
afsos unse mil na sake

lutaa dil meraa
haay aabaad ho kar
aabaad ho kar
hansi reh gayi meri
fariyaad ho kar
fariyaad ho kar

siwaa mere thhaa kaun
unkaa jahaan mein
unkaa jahaan mein
siwaa mere thhaa kaun
unkaa jahaan mein
unkaa jahaan mein
kahaan jaayenge ab
aazaad hokar
aazaad hokar
kahaan jaayenge ab
aazaad hokar
aazaad hokar

unhen maine is haal mein aaj dekhaa
unhen maine is haal mein aaj dekhaa
nigaahen tadap uthhin
naashaad ho kar
naashaad ho kar
nigaahen tadap uthhin
naashaad ho kar
naashaad ho kar

zamaane se keh do
ki khushiyaan manaayen
khushiyaan manaayen
zamaane se keh do
ki khushiyaan manaayen
khushiyaan manaayen
mohabbat tadapti hai
barbaad ho kar
barbaad ho kar
mohabbat tadapti hai
barbaad ho kar
barbaad ho kar

I had last heard this song more than four decades back. Everything is unique in this song – musical composition, melody, tune. Even dholak beats in sync with mandolin music in the background are extra-ordinaire.

No doubt, even the doyen of Hindi film music, Anil Biswas called Sajjad Hussain ‘the only original music director’ of Hindi films.

At one place it is ‘dil ke phool’ while at another it is ‘dil mein phool’. Kindly correct.
