Saanwariyaa re apni Meera ko bhool na jaanaa

Posted on: December 4, 2010

Many people have known Nirupa Roy in mother roles and Ashok Kumar in elderly avuncular roles. But that is not how they began their careers. They both acted in lead roles when they were young.

“Aanchal” (1960) is a movie where the two were paired together. though I have not seen the movie, I am informed that it was a good movie, full with social messages and all.
It was a Panchdeep Chitra production movie. It was directed by Vasant Joglekar. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Nanda, Suresh, Seema, Dhumal, Sudesh Kumar, Iftekhar, Om Prakash, Lalita Pawar etc in it.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and it is picturised on Nirupa Roy and Ashok Kumar. The picturisation before the song is also interesting.

The song is written by Pradeep and music is composed by C Ramchandra. This song is a forgotten gem, that deserves to be known better.

PS-Two years after I first discussed this song, I have come to know that this song also has another version. This version appears when Ashok Kumar and Nirupa Roy get separated. Their daughter grows up to be Nanda and she works with Ashok Kumar, not aware that he is her father. One day, Ashok Kumar hears this song with lyrics familiar to him from his past. Who is singing this song, he asks Nanda. It is my mother singing. She always sings THIS song, Nanda tells Ashok Kumar. And Ashok Kumar struggles hard to contain his emotions because he is listening to the voice of his long separated wife.

Saanwariyaa re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaanaa
Saanwariyaa re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaanaa
janam janam ki preet hamaari
janam janam ki preet hamaari
isko sadaa nibhanaa
Saanwariyaa re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaanaa

bade bhaag se tumko paayaa
bade bhaag se tumko paayaa
he praanon ke baati
jab se mile tum har sapne mein
chamke pooranmaasi
jab se mile tum har sapne mein
chamke pooranmaasi
mujhko har din naya naya laage
apna pyaar puraanaa
Saanwariyaa re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaanaa
Saanwariyaa re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaanaa

ghar aangan mein rahe chamakti
ghar aangan mein rahe chamakti
in charnon ki jyoti
is aanchal mein bandhe raho tum
banke pyaar ke moti
is aanchal mein bandhe raho tum
banke pyaar ke moti
in nainon ke madhuban mein tum
hardam raas rachaanaa
Saanwariyaa re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaanaa
Saanwariyaa re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaanaa

mujh se chipke
agar kahin tum
mujh se chipke
agar kahin tum
mere Mohan bhaage
mere Mohan bhaage
aaoge tum mere nainaa
hardam aage aage
aaoge tum mere nainaa
hardam aage aage
main to chahoon
jug jug mera
manwaa rahe deewaanaa
Saanwariyaa re apni Meera ko bhool na jaanaa
Saanwariyaa re apni Meera ko bhool na jaanaa

mujhse chhipke
agar kahin tum
mere Mohan bhaage
ae ae ae
mere Mohan bhaage
paaoge tum mere naina
hardam aage aage
ae ae

saanwariya re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaana

sanwariya re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaana
baar baar uss paar tumhaari
paagal preet pukaare
ae
baar baar uss paar tumhaari
paagal preet pukaare
main is paar
chita si jalti
jeewan nadi kinaare
main is paar chita si jalti
jeewan nadi kinaare
bina tumhaare jag ye soona
bina tumhaare jag ye soona
lagta des veeraana
sanwariya re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaana

daya karo

ab paas bulaa lo
mere jeewan daata
daya karo
ab paas bulaa lo
mere jeewan daata
meri vidhwa preet se jodo
phir suhaag ka naata
meri vidhwa preet se jodo
phir suhaag ka naata

bhaari lagta aasoo ka bhi
ab to bojh uthhaana
saanwariya re
apni Meera ko bhool na jaana

This is truly a beautiful song. Thanks, Atul!

I too discovered this song just hours ago, thanks to a comment.

Yippeeee! we finish with a wonderful number(s) by Suman Kalyanpur, one of those unsung artists. This movie joins the ranks of movies where all songs are covered, and we are now inches away from 200 Yippeeee! movies :) .
