Zindagi hai kyaa sun meri jaan

Most music lovers are aware of better known songs from movies and they are oblivious of the other songs from those movies. I have fond that these lesser known/forgotten songs can sometimes be real gems/ special songs.

Here is a lesser known song from “Maayaa” (1961). Now this movie has several well known great songs that I have already discussed in this blog. In fact, I have discussed as many as five songs from this movie in the past.

I became aware of this song thanks to Sudhir. This song is indeed a special song in the sense that it is the only ice cream vendor song in Hindi movie that one can think of. There have been three two chana zor vending songs and two of them have been discussed in this blog (Chane jor garam babu (Bandhan)(1938) and Chana zor garam babu main laayaa mazedaar (Naya Andaaz) (1956)). The third chana zor song not yet discussed is from “Kraanti” (1981) and its time will come in future.

In this song, Dev Anand poses as an ice cream vendor in order to come to the locality where Mala Sinha resides. He sells ice creams to kids and even offer them free to kids who cannot afford to pay for them. He offers one ice cream to a sari clad young girl, who on close examination turns out to be Tabassum, who later on became a popular Radio Ceylon announcer, in addition to acting sporadically in Hindi movies in bit roles. Tabassum then goes up stairs and suggests to Mala Sinha to come down and have an ice cream for herself, but Mala Sinha is not interested.
PS-The lady is not Tabassum, but Kusum Thengdi. I thank Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh for this information.

Mala Sinha must be as mature as moms of those day who tended to prohibit their kids from buying ice creams from such ice cream vendors. That is how I was prevented from buying ice creams from such ice cream vendors in my younger days.

In addition to ice cream vendors plying their trade on the kind of contraption used by Dev Anand, another way of selling ice cream those days was on a cart. The cart had more space and so that vendor also kept a loudspeaker with him where he would play popular songs of the day. To this day, I associate the songs of “Hamraaz” (1968) with ice cream vendor’s cart. Yes, “Hamraaz” (1968) songs were amazingly popular with everyone, including ice cream vendors those days.

Coming to this song from “Maayaa” (1961), this song is sung by Rafi. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Salil Chaudhary.

Song-Zindagi hai kyaa sun meri jaan(Maayaa) (1961) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Salil Chaudhary

Lyrics

zindagi hai kya
sun meri jaan
pyaar bhara dil
meethi zabaan
zindagi hai kya
sun meri jaan
pyaar bhara dil
meetthi zabaan
pyaar tujhe dega
wo maalik o pyaare
zabaan main teri meetthi karun aa yahaan
zindagi hai kya
sun meri jaan
pyaar bhara dil
meethi zabaan

honthon se meettha meettha ras tapkaao ji
ice careem waalla aaya aao ji
honthon se meettha meettha ras tapkaao ji
ice careem waalla aaya aao ji
teri gali mein
lagaa di main ne
chhoti moti si dukaan
zindagi hai kya
sun meri jaan
pyaar bhara dil
meetthi zabaan
pyaar tujhe dega wo maalik o pyaare
zabaan mein teri meetthi karun aa yahaan
zindagi hai kya
sun meri jaan
pyaar bhara dil
meetthi zabaan

door se kyun hai tuk tuk taktaa pyaare
paise bina hi le jaa le jaa pyaare
door se kyun hai tuk tuk taktaa pyaare
paise bina hi le jaa le jaa pyaara
anna do anna
nahin hai to udaasi kaisi meri jaan
zindagi hai kya
sun meri jaan
pyaar bhara dil
meetthi zabaan
pyaar tujhe dega wo maalik o pyaare
zabaan main teri meetthi karun aa yahaan
zindagi hai kya
sun meri jaan
pyaar bhara dil
meetthi zabaan

maal khazaana yahin sab reh jaayega
yahaan se koi kaho kya le jaayega
maal khazaana yahin sab reh jaayega
yahaan se koi kaho kya le jaayega
maaya hai maaya
ye duniya
ye duniya ke daastan
zindagi hai kya
sun meri jaan
pyaar bhara dil
meetthi zabaan
pyaar tujhe dega wo maalik o pyaare
zabaan main teri meetthi karun aa yahaan
zindagi hai kya
sun meri jaan
pyaar bhara dil
meetthi zubaan
zindagi hai kya
sun meri jaan
pyaar bhara dil
meetthi zabaan

Atulji,
The girl in this song who goes upto Mala Sinha is not Tabassum. She is Kusum Thengdi, who has,I agree, lot of similarity to Tabassum’s looks.Tabassum has not acted in Maya.In fact,in 1961,she acted only in one film-Dharamputra.
Tabssum is the only person in Bollywood, who specialised in 5 facets of Mediums,Film,TV,Print Media,Radio and Film Journalism. She however, never worked for Radio Ceylon as announcer. She only anchored various programs for advertisers.
Tabassum acted in 75 Films, starting with Nargis(1946) and Mera Suhag(1947) as Baby Tabassum.
She successfully ran”Phool khile hain Gulshan gulshan” on TV from 1972 to 1994.
She also Produced and Directed “Tum par hum kurban” in 1985.

Thanks for this information.

Tabassum indeed anchored various sponsored programmes broadcast on Radio Ceylon, rather than working as announcer.
