atul's bollywood song a day- with full lyrics

Lo aaye jhoom ke pilpili

Posted on: March 4, 2011

After a somewhat longer wait than usual, here is that occasion again when this blog reaches a century and we celebrate it by discussing a special song ! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the 3600th song of this blog !

Here is this song that must be the rarest of rare. I in fact had never heard of this song or this movie till a few hours ago. When I was wondering what song to discuss as the 3600th song, I stuumbled upon this song.

After that, I have listened to this song many a times. In addition to being a rare and therefore “new” song, what a magical song it is !

The song is sung by Rafi and Meena Mangeshkar. Rafi is a prolific singer, but Meena Mangeshkar sang very few songs and this must be one of the very rare duets that Meena Mangeshkar sang with Rafi.

The lyrics of this song are quite funny. They are written by Hasrat Jaipuri, and he must have enjoyed writing this song, consisting of nonsensical rhyming words viz “pilpili, Silbili” etc. In fact, it is these rhyming nonsensical word where I may have gone somewhat wrong, when it comes to writing down the lyrics. I request my readers with keener ears to point out corrections as required.

Only the audio of this song is available, so I am unable to say how this song must have been picturised. This movie “Pilpili Saheb” (1954) had actors like Agha,Shyama,Sundar,Pran, Mehmood,Lailta Kumari,Kuldeep etc. From these names, one can guess that the movie was a B grade light hearted movie. The movie has been forgotten, alongwith its songs, but what a song it is ! Just listen to it. If you are like me, you will be spell bound !

Music is composed by Sardul Kwatra, and the music, which is clearly influenced by rock and roll, really rocks, as they say it these days. The music is awesome, as is the singing, and indeed are the lyrics.

On this occasion, I thank all my visitors and well wisheres, who keep encouraging me through various means, viz their visits, comments, votes, suggestions etc. It is heartening that a few visitors have decided to lighten my burden by sending me lyrics, write ups etc. I am extremely thankful to them for this nice gestures. To realise that we have a growing number of like minded individuals who love the kind of songs discussed in this blog is a great feeling.

Here is hoping that this blog continues to reach many milestones in the coming days. For now, enjoy this fantastic song from “Pilpili Saaheb” (1954).

Congrats on 3600, Atul! Like I say with each of these milestones, may there be many more centuries to come! We know that there are plenty of songs out there still to be unearthed and posted here.

What a delightful song this 3600th song is! Just love it. I’m also hearing it for the first time. Good pick for this milestone!

Thanks, Raja. Indeed this 3600th song is quite a rare song, just the kind of song that I describe as a rare gem.

I hope that we will have some quick centuries in the days to come. 4000 mark is a few months away, if I can build up a good momentum of posting of songs.

Missing words could be :

o pyaar jataane waale
daulat ke matwaale
ishq ye nahin hain aasaan
Jitne rupey tu lutaale

oy khwaab mein patthar toda
Majnu ne barson chhoda
circus ka tu hai joker
na tera tera mera jodaa

Atul ji,

What a wonderful song. On hearing this song, I can just visualize Agha doing this song on the screen. (I have not seen the movie so cannot say for sure). :)

Atul ji, Nahm Bhai,
The second correction should read as follows:

oy farhaad ne patthar toda
majnu ne sar ko phoda
circus ka tu hai joker
saath tera mera jodaa

In the line ‘oy farhaad ne patthar toda’, there appears to be a small skip in audio so the complete word ‘farhaad’ is not clearly audible. However, as the lady is responding to the two lines by male singer, which mention Farhaad and Majnu, the word Farhaad fits in best in the first line of this correction.

I too would love to watch the picturisation, but the chances are slim. I do not think prints of this movie may have survived. This movie certainly appears to be a great fun movie but that had few takers at that time.

Thanks for filling up the missing words.

First,CONGRATULATIONS on achieving yet another mile stone.May you cross many more !
The movie PILPILI SAHEB was special on one more count. It had PRAN as a Hero against SHYAMA.
Meena Mangeshkar was already Mrs.Meena Khadikar, just before this movie. She has few Bengali songs too to her credit.
Pilpili Saheb was produced by Sardul Kwatra’s brother,H.S.Kwatra.

Thanks for these valuable information.

I have seen this movie, which had Agha in a leading role. It was indeed a hilarious comedy with funny dialogues & Agha acting at his best. This song was superb then & continues to be so even now.
