Roothha huaa chandaa hai roothhi huyi chaandni

Posted on: May 4, 2011

If one creates one or two masterpiece songs in a movie that I suppose the creators of such songs in that movie could be justified in taking it easy while creating the remaining songs. But that is not how they worked in the (G)olden days. The created one gem after another in the same movie, as if this was the last movie of their careers. And they continued it for their other movies as well for their entire careers that lasted a few decades. and then there were many others who worked in the same way. No wonder we are left with a huge body of quality music that we can keep exploring for decades, without being able to exhaust it.

Take this movie “Aaraam” (1951) for example. I have already discussed 7 songs from it. Certainly 7 great songs from a movie is good enough. But no, that is not all. There are more great songs in it ! Yes, seriously.

Here is this lovely song from Lata. This “roothna -manaana” (sulking-appeasing) song is sung by Lata. It is picturised on Madhubala and Dev Anand. Both are sulking, but here the lady takes the initiative to offer the olive branch. How very cute !

The song is written by Prem Dhawan. Music is created by Anil Biswas. I have heard this song for the first time only just now, and I loved it on the very first “hear” itself. Yes, that is what timeless music is often all about. Listen to it for the first time six decades after it is created, and you still find it fresh as a morning dew. This is a song that will certainly make the day of the listeners.

Lyrics

roothaa huaa chandaa hai roothi huyi chaandni
roothaa huaa chandaa hai roothi huyi chaandni
tum hi kaho kaun manaaye jee
roothaa huaa Kaanhaa hai roothi huyi baansuri
roothaa huaa Kaanhaa hai roothi huyi baansuri
kaise koi geet sunaaye jee
roothaa huaa chandaa hai roothi huyi chaandni
roothaa huaa chandaa hai roothi huyi chaandni

preet kaa saudaa preet se keejiye
preet kaa saudaa preet se keejiye
jaisaa dil liyaa hai vaisaa dil deejiye
jee vaisaa dil deejiye
dil to kuchh aur kahe, nainaa kuch aur hi
kaise koi preet nibhaaye jee
kaise koi preet nibhaaye jee
roothaa huaa chandaa hai roothi huyi chaandni
roothaa huaa chandaa hai roothi huyi chaandni

dekho jee hat gayi kaari badariyaa
dekho jee hat gayi kaari badariyaa
chamkaa hai chaand phir baajee baansuriyaa
jee baajee baansuriyaa
dil to hai maan jaaye,
zid hai magar pyaar ki
pahle kise kaun bulaaye jee
pahle kise kaun bulaaye jee
pahle kise kaun bulaaye jee

I heard this song for the first time today, and just like you predicted, Atul, I think it is beautiful – the lyrics, the music, Lata’s voice, and most of all, Madhubala’s expressive face. I feel like listening to it over and over again. Thanks, Atul, for this wonderful song!

Nice to see you back. And I am pleased to see that there are some songs that are “new” even for you. Is it not such a wonderful song ! It is “love at first listening” kind of song as Raja would call it.

The song would also qualify as a “Chaand Song” I guess.
