It is generally believed that songs become rare and obscure due to ravages of time. And the process is speeded up if the song is from an obscure movie.
But there are cases when even movies and songs as recent as of 1988 vintage end up becoming forgotten. And certain details about such movies are just not available on internet.
Take the case of the movie “Trishaagni” (1988). This movie, which had Nana Patekar,Pallavi Joshi ,Nitish Bhardwaj,Alok Nath etc was certainly not meant for ordinary public who are not evolved enough in their taste. This movie was meant for public with refined taste, and going by the failure of this movie at the box office, this kind of movie watchers are quite miniscule in number.
This movie won critical acclaim and even official recognition. The movie won the national award for best movie (Indira Gandhi Swarn Kamal) in 1989. Nabendu Ghosh, a renowned Bangla author, who has also written a few Hindi screenplays in the past (Sujata,Bandini,Devdas,Teesri Kasam, for instance) was the director of this movie. He in fact wore many hats for this movie, including Producer,director, screenplay etc.
Nabendu Ghosh did not want the movie to have any songs in it. But at the insistence of Salil Chaudhary, who was hired as music director of this movie, he relented and agreed to have one song in this movie.
This one song was sung by Asha Bhonsle and picturised on Pallavi Joshi.
The movie as well as this song is only known to a knowledgeable few. though I was well into my grown up days in 1989, I was in a blackout phase as far as Hindi movies were concerned. I may have vaguely heard of this movie, but I was neither interested, nor aware of the song from this movie.
I became aware of this song when Prakashchandra, a regular visitor and contributor to this blog sent me the lyrics of this song, and insisted that this song had to be there in the blog.
I finally heard this song for the first time just a few days ago, and I realised that this was a gem that deserved to be better known.
Only the audio of this song is available and that is enough for one to be able to enjoy this song. We know that Asha Bhonsle is the singer and Sali Chaudhary is the music director, but pray who is the lyricist ? Despire searching far and wide, I drew a blank. All sites are unanimous in their ignorance, that the lyricist is not known. There is mention of a dialogue writer called K Shailendra in the credits of this movie and a site (devoted to Salil Chaudhary) jumped to the conclusion that this K Shailendra was the same as lyricist Shailendra and attrbuted the lyrics of this song to Shailendra who had died as early as in 1966 itself !
I requested out own movie encyclopaedia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh to tell us who the lyricist of this song is. And he has dug up the information that so many music lovers were dying to know.Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh says:
N.Ghosh, in his autobiography’Eka Naukar Jatri’ says,” I was against any songs in Trishagni, but on the insistansce of Salilda,we decided to include only one song in it and the responsibility of writing the song was thrust on me.This was something new to me,but since I was wellconversant with Hindi and could write in it, I wrote the song. Since there was only one song in the movie, Lyricist’s tag was not attached to me.”
So now we know, for the first time in internet that the lyrics for this song was written by Nabendu Ghosh !
With this information, here is this fantastic song from “Trishaagni” (1988).
And I am happy to inform my readers that this song is the 4100 th song of this blog. Yes, we have reached yet another century, and yet another milestone in our long musical journey. We are steadily gaining strength as time passes. TRISHAGNI,as you rightly said,was a movie for the discerning and the makers of the film knew its fate.
For the benefit of the readers:
This story takes place in an Asian Desert town,Sariput,in 100 B.C.
A svere sand storm destroys the entire town except the Budhist Monastery,its 2 Monks and 2 villege children.The monks,Pthumitra(Alok Nath) and the younger Uchanda(Nana Patekar),bring up the children Nirvana(Nitish Bharadwaj) and Iti (Pallavi Joshi).
After 20 years,these young people fall in love,committ the forbidden and are thrown out of the Monastery.
Another sandstorm comes and the Monks set out to bring them back.
There are few dialogues and only one song.But the film became controversial due to the rare nude scene of Pallavi Joshi’s bathing.
This movie was based on a short story-Moru-o-shangho,written by the literary giant of Bengal Sharadendu Bandopadhyaya.SB has writtenDurga-38,Kangan-39,Naujawan-39 and Azad-40 screenplays for Bombay Talkies.
His VYOMKESH BAKSHI became famous as a Hindi TV serial in the 1990s.

Thanks for this detailed description. Indeed, this was a movie for the discerning audience. I think movies like this should be rather released on VCD/DVD and not on movie halls, so that the people who are interested may buy the movie and watch it. I hope there is market for movies like this, however small it may be.

Congrats, Atul, on getting to 4100. This blog is now fast becoming THE place for preserving the musical legacy of yesteryear. We need to build on it.
I must admit my knowledge is very limited but thankfully we have encyclopaedias like Arunkumar Deshmukh ji and Sudhir ji active here. Thanks to them, we are able to record for posterity old gems and trivia that would otherwise have been lost forever. I think the quality of information on this blog is absolutely top-notch.
This is a lovely song. I’d never heard it before. Never even heard of the movie till today. Thanks to Prakashchandra who brought this song to our notice.

One thing that I have learnt in life is that if you give respect and recognition to others, then you get the same back. People will go out of their way to help you if you have earned their trust and confidence. I find that this philosophy works with anyone, be they human or even pets. Forget humans, even my cat (whose photo is there in my gravator, seated on my computer) trusts me unconditionally. 🙂
