Surma mera niraalaa

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Celebrating and remembering Kishore Da on the anniversary of his birth today. :)

Kabhi Andheraa Kabhi Ujaala is a 1958 film from Mehtaab Productions, directed by CP Dikshit. The impressive star cast includes Kishore Kumar, Nutan, Shekhar, Chitra, KN Singh, Helen, Kum Kum, Madan Puri, Lalita Pawar, Yakub, Tun Tun, Kesari and others. The songs writing for this movie is shared by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Hasrat Jaipuri. This particular song is written by Majrooh Saab. And the music composition is by OP Nayyar.

Only the audio of this song is available so far, but one can safely assume that the on screen performance of this song is by Kishore Da himself. There is none who can even attempt to perform a song such as this. I tried to count the number of different tones and modulations that Kishore Da uses in this song, and I simply lost track after having counted a dozen. With a masterful control over his chords, Kishore Da packs such an immense assortment of vocal variation, especially in his fun songs. In this space, Kishore Da is peerless. Many have tried to emulate him but none had ever been successful. One can keep recounting the songs one after the other, and this caravan of fun simply goes on and on.

Enjoy this gem of a rendition by Kishore Da, absolutely un-imaginable.

Song-Surma mera niraalaa ( Kabhi Andhera Kabhi Ujaala) (1958) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar

Your blog also acts as reminders to all of us here that the songs which we had heard many years back and forgotten over a period of time, have again surfaced here. This is one of such songs in usual Kishore Kumar style. You have rightly mentioned Kishore as peerless.

I missed that today was Kishore Kumar’s birth anniversary. If I had known I would have recommended this song for inclusion in today’s blog :

Sadanand ji,

Wow and thanks, this is such a wonderful melody, it took my heart as I listened to it for the first time today. Such a flowing rhythm, it is just so endearing as the voices flow with the words ‘pehloo se dil sarak jaaye’. And a wonder song considering that this movie had the two great singers,Suraiyyaa and Mukesh as the lead pair, and majority of the songs of this movie are by them. This one off-side song is such a fresh relish. Roshan doing a “chiki bum chiki bum’ is such welcome sound.

Thanks again for introducing this song to this blog. Wonderful. :)
