Mast chaandni jhoom rahi hai

Posted on: September 30, 2011

This is a song that many music buffs may already be familiar with, but I discovered this song only just now. and I loved this song. I am sure this song is already regarded as a lovely song by those who are already familiar with it.

This song is from “Pyaar Ki Baaten” (1951) which is a movie Produced by Nargis art and directed by Akhtar Hussain. this movie had Nargis and Trilok Kapoor in lead roles, with Nazir, Rashid, Neelam Kothari, Maruti, Nissar, Khurshid, H. Prakash, Cuckoo etc also figuring in the cast.

This lovely duet is a quintessential Chayaageet song. Nargis sings this song from her home in moonlit night, and Trilok Kumar, located a few hundred yards away, responds by singing the same song. We are told that sound travels at the rate of about 300 metres per second, but the way the two voices sing simultaneously it is as if they are singing to each other face to face. :)

This lovely duet is sung by Geeta Dutt and Mukesh. I had heard a lot about Trilok Kapoor and I watched him for the first time here. My first impression is that he somewhat resembles Raj Kapoor in appearance and mannerisms, though it should be the other way round because Trilok Kapoor was from the generation of Prithviraj Kapoor and he was a cousin of Prithviraj Kapoor.

Manohar Lal Khanna (father of Usha Khanna) is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bulo C Rani.

Here is this wonderful duet from “Pyaar Ki Baaten” (1951) for the music lovers to savour.

Lyrics

mast chaandni jhoom rahi hai,
naach rahi hai
masti ki barsaat hai
bheegee-bheegee raat hai
mast chaandni jhoom rahi hai,
naach rahi hai
masti ki barsaat hai
bheegee-bheegee raat hai

mast chaandni jhoom rahi hai,
naach rahi hai

dil ki basti veeraan hai
tu man ke meet kahaan hai
meri duniyaa aaj jawaan hai
bechain papeehe ke honthon par mere dil ki baat hai

bheegee-bheegee raat hai
mast chaandni jhoom rahi hai,
naach rahi hai
masti ki barsaat hai
bheegee-bheegee raat hai
mast chaandni jhoom rahi hai,
naach rahi hai

ye rut ye rangeelaa mausam
aur birhaa mein tadpe ham
kyun bichhad gaye ho baalam
nazar milaa kar nazar churaa le,
ye bhi koi baat hai
bheegee-bheegee raat hai
mast chaandni jhoom rahi hai,
naach rahi hai
masti ki barsaat hai
bheegee-bheegee raat hai
mast chaandni jhoom rahi hai,
naach rahi hai

aajaa ab dil toot na jaaye
sabar kaa daaman chhoot na jaaye
qismat mujh se rooth na jaaye
preet kaa rog lagaane waale,
laaj tere haath hai

preet kaa rog lagaane waale,
laaj tere haath hai
bheegee-bheegee raat hai
mast chaandni jhoom rahi hai,
naach rahi hai
masti ki barsaat hai
bheegee-bheegee raat hai
mast chaandni jhoom rahi hai,
naach rahi hai

i have read somewhere that Trilok Kapoor and Kamal Kapoor were cousins of Raj Kapoor family. and so was Surinder Kapoor who was secretary to Geeta Bali and father of Anil Boney and Sanjay Kapoor. i am saying was bcoz i read that he passed away on saturday last. he has also produced movies under his banner S.K.films. his films always began with a homage to Geetha Bali. his films of my generation was Hum Paanch, WOh Saat Din etc.

You are right. All these Kapoors were cousins of Prithviraj Kapoor.

Atul ji,
Trilok Kapoor was the first cousin of Prithviraj Kapoor(paternal uncle’s son-Chachera bhai).May be that is why the similarity in looks and mannerisms of Raj kapoor.
PYAR KI BATEN(1951),was a very interesting film.
It was produced and directed by Akhtar Hussain and it had 2 Music directors,2 cinematographers,2 Choreographers,5 Lyricists,3 Story writers,3 Dialogue writers and 3 Screenplay writers.
There were 2 MDs.Bulo c Rani gave music to 4 songs and Khayyam(in the name of Sharmaji) 5 songs.
Asha Bhosle first sang for Khayyam in this film(Hamein chhod ke na jaana).
story was also interesting.Prince Badar(Trilok Kapoor) of Halab Kingdom was a vagabond. To improve him, marriage was proposed with Nadira(Nargis),princess of Nakhlistan. She refuses him and sends a doll to him.Enraged,Badar wants to take revenge and sets out as a poor peasant.
Gulnar, step mother of Nadira wants to marry her to her idiot cousin. To get away from this,Nadira runs away with the help of Saki(Pran),the army chief. They stay in an Inn,where Saki proposes marriage to her.By chance,Prince Badar is serving in that Inn.He saves Nadira and brings her to her palace, from where Saki kidnaps her.
The story tells us how Badar rescues her and how they fall for each other, etc.
