There are songs for various occasions, like festivals, and also for certain days, viz the first day of the month, but I was not aware that there was a Hindi movie song for the last day of the year too.

If new year is the day of making resolutions (only to give them up after a few days :) ), then last day of the year is the day of bidding farewell to the old year and welcoming the new year, hoping that the new year would bring in better luck than the previous year. “Teri Talaash Mein” (1968) is by now an obscure movie. This B grade movie was an A G Movie arts production. Kewal Mishra was the director of the movie. Its “star” cast consisted of names like Kumkum, Shailesh Kumar, Mohan Choti, Madan Puri, Amaranth, K N Singh, Indira etc.

“Raam Aur Shyaam” (1967) was a Vijaya International production. It was directed by Chanakya. The movie had Dilip Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Mumtaz, Nirupa Roy, Kanhaiyalal, Nazir Hussain, Sajjan, Mukri, Amar, Leela Misra, Zebunissa, Farida, Pran etc in it.

Datta Naik was born in Goa, which was then a Portuguese colony. He came to Bombay to try his luck as a music director. Initially he acted as an assistant to S D Burman before starting out as an independent music director. He changed his name to N Datta by re ordering the sequence of his name.

In Hindi movies, a female character singing a bhajan in front of the idol of a God used to be a standard scene from 1950s to 1970s. I have always wondered who pioneered this genre of songs. Now I believe that I have got my answer. Having watched a few such songs from the earlier days of Hindi movies, I have now come to the conclusion that Amirbai Karnataki could well be the first singer to sing such bhajans as well as the first actress to enact them on screen.

Some newspapers tend to have columns called “This day that year” or similar. In that column, they discuss the important events that happened on that day in the past.

Today is 29th of december 2011. If I am asked to describe what I did in the past years on this day then I will draw a blank for most of the years, including years as recent as one or two years back. But ironically there is one year on this date that is as fresh in my mind as if it happened just yesterday. In reality, it happened exactly 40 years back. Yes, I remember the day of 29th december 1971 very well. It was a day that did not begin all that well but became memorable as the day wore on.
