Ye bahaaron ka samaa

Posted on: December 30, 2011

Datta Naik was born in Goa, which was then a Portuguese colony. He came to Bombay to try his luck as a music director. Initially he acted as an assistant to S D Burman before starting out as an independent music director. He changed his name to N Datta by re ordering the sequence of his name.

N Datta is often confused with Dattaram Wadkar, also known as Dattaram, who was also a musician of Goan origin. Dattaram was an assistant to Shankar Jaikishan. Dattaram too branched out as an independent music director but then went back to work as assistant to Shankar Jaikishan when his career as an independent music director failed to take off.

On internet, there is much incorrect information circulating about N Datta even in respected sites like YT, earthmusic.net etc. For example, all N Datta compositions are described as compositions by Narayan Datta in earthmusic.net.Same is the case in YT too, but then one needs to be on one’s guard while believing the comments on YT.
In reality, a person called Narayan Datta did not exist ! It was Datta Naik, who composed these songs under the name of N Datta.

Datta Naik composed music in over 50 movies. This blog contains songs from 24 of his movies. Some day we will have a century of his songs in this blog. His compositions included some extremely well known songs in movies like “Sadahana” (1958), “Dhool Ka Phool” (1959) etc.

N Datta died on 30th december 1987. So today (30th december) is his death anniversary.

As a tribute to N Datta, whose contribution in enriching Hindi movie music was second to none, here is a song from “Milaap” (1955). “Milaap” (1955) was directed by Raj Khosla. This movie had Dev Anand and Geeta Bali in lead roles.

This song is fact has two versions. Lata version is picturised on Geeta Bali and Dev Anand. There is a Hemant Kumar version too. Its video does not seem to be available. It would obviously be picturised on Dev Anand and Geeta Bali, if it was available.

So here is this nice song from “Milaap” (1955) which was the debut movie of N Datta as a music director. Sahir Ludhainvi is the lyricist.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Mr Sadanand Kamath.

Lata version

ye bahaaron ka samaa,
chaand taaron ka samaa
kho na jaaye aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron ka samaa,
chaand taaron ka samaa
kho na jaaye aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron ka samaa

aasmaan se rang ban ke
bah rahi hai chaandni
aasmaan se rang ban ke
bah rahi hai chaandni
bezubani ki zubaan se
keh rahi hai chaandni
jaagti rut na jahaan
kho na jaaye
aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron ka samaa
chaand taaron ka samaa
kho na jaaye
aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron ka samaa

raat ke hamraah
dhalti jaa rahi hai zindagi
raat ke hamraah
dhalti jaa rahi hai zindagi
shama ki soorat
pighalti jaa rahi hai zindagi
roshni kuchh kar
dhuan ho na jaaye
aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron ka samaa,
chaand taaron ka samaa
kho na jaaye
aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron ka samaa

aa zara hans kar nigaahon
mein nigaahein daal den
aa zara hans kar nigaahon
mein nigaahein daal den
hasraton ka kaarvaan
kho naa jaaye
aa abhi jaa
ye bahaaron ka samaa,
chaand taaron ka samaa
kho na jaaye
aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron ka samaa

————————-
Hemant Kumar version
————————

ye bahaaron kaa samaa,
chaand taaron kaa samaa
kho na jaaye
aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron kaa samaa

zindagaani dard ban jaaye
kahin aisaa na ho
zindagaani dard ban jaaye
kahin aisaa na ho
saans aahen sard ban jaaye
kahin aisaa na ho
dil tadap kar na jahaan
so na jaaye
aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron kaa samaa,
chaand taaron ka samaa
kho na jaaye aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron ka samaa

kyaa huaa
kyun is tarah
toone nigaahein pher li
kyaa huaa
kyun is tarah
toone nigaahein pher li
meri raahon ki taraf se
apni raahein pher li
zindagi ka kaaravaan
kho na jaaye
aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron kaa samaa,
chaand taaron ka samaa
kho na jaaye
aa bhi jaa
ye bahaaron ka samaa

Atul ji,
you have given a very good short and to the point profile of N.Dutta.He is one of my favourite MDs.
I remember having read somewhere long back that his full name was Narayan datta Naik.May be that is the reason of reference of Narayan Datta.Possible.
In his first and debut film,Raj Khosla’s Milap-55,Datta insisted that the songs be written only by Sahir Ludhiyanvi.Actually,he did not know him personally, but he had immense respect for his Lyrics. Thus started their friendship and they gave many popular songs together.
Secondly,N.Dutta used minimum of orchestra in his songs to bring out the required atmosphere in the song situation.
N.Dutta (he preferred writing his name as DUTTA rather than original spelling of Datta) gave music to 55 films.

N Dutta was a fan of Sahir Ludhianvi. It is possible that he may have come into contact with him while assisting S D Burman. Those days, Sahir Ludhinavi used to write lyrics for S D Burman in most of the films and N Dutta was his assistant/music arranger.

I rate N Dutta as a highly talented music director. But in Bollywood, one also requires luck factor to supplement the talent. Another reason which may have deprived him of joining the lead music directors of his time was his reported frequent illness getting him out of action for months.

Atul ji,
While going thru my notes at random,I found that there WAS a singer and music Director by the name NARAYAN DATT.
Narayan Datt was the son of the Raaj Gaayak of Bikaner state. He was born in Jodhpur district. After taking a regular training in classical music,he came to Bombay.
He got his first break with Rasili-1947.Under MD Hanuman Prasad he sang a duet with Mukesh and Geeta Dutt each.He also sang for Raj Kapoor in Neelkamal-47.He sang in Sehra-48,Gauna and Uddhar in 1949,as well as several songs in C grade and stunt films.
He stopped singing and as a Music director, his first film was MORDHWAJ-1952.Then came Aastik-56,Shyam ki jogan-57,Naya Kadam-58,Pujarin-72,Jai hanuman and Seetharam Radheshyam in 73,Saraswati Laxmi Parvati-75 and Sindoor ka daan and Humse mile tum in 1984.
He also gave music to 3 Rajasthani films,as well as some songs for Arya Samaj,Jain Institutes and Rajneesh foundation. His institute ‘sur tarang’ trained many singers.
He died suddenly on 16-6-1988 at Bombay.
Since there was a composer by the name of Narayan Datt, many internet sites must have confusion with N.Dutta.

Thanks a lot for this information. You are right. Most internet site assume that N Datta stands for Narayan Datta whereas the Narayan Datt composed music only in a few movies as mentioned by you.

Thanks for this valuable information. I was not aware of this except that some time N Dutta was referred to as Narayan Dutta in many internet sites and the mystery is now unfolded.
