Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath

Posted on: February 19, 2012

“Holiday in Bombay” (1963) is a movie which is barely known to most Hindi movie enthusiasts today. Same is the case for the music of this movie. But when one begins to look at the songs of this movie, one is left amazed. How can a movie full of such songs be so obscure. This movie should be known among music lovers at least for its songs if for nothing else.

The song under discussion is a duet sung by Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar and chorus. this song is picturised as a wedding reception song. As was usual in the movies of those days, wedding receptions, parties etc would be held on the palatial accomodations of the main characters and the picturisation of this song is no exception.

Most songs of Hindi movies have only the participants performing and the audience are seem watching the performance stoically, but this song is a collaborative effort, much like this blog :) . All the guests are wholeheartedly involved in singing and dancing and they all are having a whale of a time.

And what a lively song it is ! Anand Bakshi’s lyrics have been set to a wonderful dance music by N Datta. One can continue listening and watching to this song many a times without feeling bored. That is what I have done just now, as I watched this song a dozen times or so while trying to get the lyrics of this song, with its colour coding, right.

I have not been able to identify the lead dancers of this song, though I suspect that one of the dancers (lip syning in Usha Mangeshkar’s voice) looks like Laxmichaaya. I know that inability to identify Laxmichaaya is blasphemy in Memsaab’s school, but then my ability to identify acresses of those days in comparable to the ability of Keshto Mukherji to rough up Dara Singh. Therefore I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the artists in this song.
PS-The dancers and Jeewan Kala and Laxmi Chhaya. I thank our knowledgeable readers for identifying them.

Here is this extremely enjoyable song from “Holiday in Bombay” (1963).

Lyrics

Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath
Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath

main mari re laaj se
aha
hadd padi
padi re aaj se

oho
chali baabul ke raaj se
hoy hoy hoy

ke Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath
ke Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath

maine khidki se jhaanka
wo chhail chhabeela baanka
maine khidki se jhaanka
wo chhail chhabeela baanka

haaye dushman meri jaan ka
main mar gayi
le aaya baaraat
ke chhaliyaa
ke chhaliyaa

ke Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath
ke Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath

main mari re laaj re
aha
hadd padi
padi re aaj se

oho
chali baabul ke raaj se
hoy hoy hoy
ke Chhaila chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath

main thhi man ki shehzaadi
chhin gayi re meri aazaadi
main thhi man ki shehzaadi
chhin gayi re meri aazaadi

ab main hoon bulbul faryaadi
rahoongi pinjre mein din raat
ke chhaliyaa
ke chhaliyaa

ke Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath
ke Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath

main mari re laaj re
aha
hadd padi
padi re aaj se

oho
chali baabul ke raaj se
hoy hoy hoy

ke Chhaila chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath

ye dil to ro sakta hai
kajre ko dho sakta hai
ye dil to ro sakta hai
kajre ko dho sakta hai

par ab kya ho sakta hai
ke pad gaye phere poore saat
ke chhaliya
ke chhaliya

ke Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath
ke Chhalia chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath

main mari re laaj re
aha
hadd padi
padi re aaj se

oho
chali baabul ke raaj se
hoy hoy hoy

ke Chhaila chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath
ke Chhaila chhaila pakad ke haath
mohe le chala re apne saath

Atulji, Your guess is right about Laxmi Chhaya. Another lady looks like Jeevan Kala. Hope I am right!

Sorry, that’s not Laxmi Chhaya but a very young Padma Khanna!

Laxmi Chhaya and Jeevan Kala are the dancers..

She is very much Laxmi Chhaya.
I am pleased to inform you that I attended the premier of ‘Holiday in Mumbai’ at Imperial Cinema in 1963 as my father used to know Shri Hiralal Pandya, Manager of Imperial Cinema. I could see Vijaya Choudhary(looking very slim and beautiful) and Rajan Haksar(husband of fatso Manorama). Shashi Kapoor could not attend

Thanks for the confirmation of Laxmi Chhaya’s identity. It is nice to know that you attended the premier of this movie. How did this movie fare at the box office ?

Thanks for such a lively song.
RE ??, it sounds like
“main hoon bulbul faryaadi,
rahoongi pinjre mein din raat”
