“Adaa” (1951) is a Goel Cine Corporation movie. This movie was produced and directed by Devendra Goel. Starcast of the movie had Rehana, Shekher, Gope, Madan Puri, Mohana, Shanta Kumari etc in it.

Those were the days when Talat Mehmood was the most sought after male playback singer. He was used as the main male playback singer in this mvie as well.

On the occasion of Talat Mehmood’s birth anniversary (24th february) here is this Talat Mehmood song from “Adaa” (1951). Behzad Lucknowi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Madan Mohan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Jise dil mein basaana chaahaa thhha (Ada)(1951) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Behzad Lucknowi, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

jise dil mein basana chaaha thha
usse dil mein apne basa na sakey
aur ab ye tamanna hai dil ki
hamen yaad bhi kuchh bhi aa na sakey

dhokha yeh tera kab tak chalta
jo haal thha aakhir khul ke raha
jo haal thha aakhir khul ke raha
dil toot gaya achha hi hua
hum aur to thhokar kha na sakey
jise dil mein basaana chaaha thha
usse dil mein apne basa na sakey

ab aur nahin uljhan koi
ek tees abhi tak baaki hai
ek tees abhi tak baaki hai
kyun ghair ko hum apna samjhe
is gham ko dil se bhula na sake
jise dil mein basaana chaaha thha
usse dil mein apne basa na sakey
aur ab ye tamanna hai dil ki
hamen yaad bhi kuchh bhi aa na sakey

wow, what a song, what a voice and what a personality. he is so dashing, must have broken many hearts in his days!!
thanks atulji :-)

If you see pics of his young age, you will believe your words. I have read somewhere that he did commercial/advertisement for one cigarette comp also. (FYI he was very fond of smoking). Arunji will be the right person to put some light on this.

Khyati ji,
There was a jingle on a cigarette by Mukesh.
There was an ad of a Picle by Dilip kumar.
There was an ad of Brylcream by Kishore Kumar.
There were several ads of Lux Soap by many yesteryear actresses starting with Leela Chitnis.
Talat was almost a chain smoker.

hmm. with a cigarette in his hand he did look even more dashing, an absolute killer!! he looks better than most the reigning stars of his days, people who ardent of those those stars, excuse me ;-)

Atul ji,
ADAA-1951 was a wonderful musical film. This was another film of Madan mohan which was a hit and all the songs had become popular.
Madan mohan’s assistants in this film were V.Balsara and Bipin Gupta.
Incidently, both these assistants became Music Directors later. While Balsara gave music alone,Bipin Gupta joined the jodi of Bipin-Babul.
There were 8 songs in the film and Madan Mohan had used as many as 7 singers.Lata,Asha, geeta,Talat,SDBatish,Kishore Kumar and Shamshad.
While there were 4 lyricists(Prem Dhawan,RMAli khan,Bezad Lucknowi and saraswati Kr. Deepak),prem Dhawan was also the Choreographer of this movie. Now this is something which is new.Prem Dhawan was known to be a producer,Director,Music Director and Lyricist, and also an actor, but he seems to have been a Choreograhpher too !
That way,in those days,to sustain in the film world Artists used to do various roles, besides their special skills.I remember that Badri Prashad, who was a Character actor of many films, was also a choreographer in several films, even Guru Dutt, and MD Jamal sen were also choreographers. In fact Jamal Sen was also an accomplished Dancer in Uday Shankar’s troupe.
The story and dialogues were done by Madhusudan Kalelkar,a wellknown Marathi Dramatist and author.
ADAA -51 was a routine story, which was the staple of many films in those days.Madan,a young man goes to see a variety show.In the show,he wins a shooting conest and gets the necklace of the heroine,
Meena(Rehana).Madan(Shekhar) loses his heart to her.Madan goes to Bombay to trace her company and to meet her,but he learns that Meena left the co. along with the hero Singh(Madan Puri). In bombay he gets a new friend Mithoomal(Gope).Madan meets a dancer Rajani, who invites him to her show.he goes with the friend and finds Meena also there.Rajani, however informs him thatmeena is marrying Singh shortly. On the advice of Mithoomal,Madan meets Meena to confirm this, but she refuses the story and they unite again in love. This is resented by Rajani and Singh. They create misunderstandings between the lovers and they separate.Mithoomal come forward and clears all the misunderstandings and the lovers re-reunite.Rajni and Singh also love each others.
Thus all is well that ends well.

Correction-
The Bipin Gupta, mentioned above was NOT a part of Bipin-Babul Jodi.It was Bipin Dutta who was in the Jodi.
I thank Sudhir ji for pointing this slip.
Bipin Dutta also had given music independently, first to ‘Kya yeh Bambai hai’-59.His 2 songs were there in AlamAraa ki beti-60.
Diamond King(unreleased) and Baghi Shahzada-64 were his other films.
He did more work as a Jodi than independently.

Even CH Atma gave a jingle for a cigarette (Delux Tenor cigarettte ). I vividly recall it , as heard in my school days and wondered what hard days came to him !- K S shenoy

Lovely song rendered melodiously,Every song rendered by him be a geeth, ghazal or film music was captivating.I have attended his live concerts.Memorable.Perfect gentleman.
