“Hongkong”(1962) was produced and directed by Paachi. Starcast of the movie included names like Ashok Kumar, B Saroja Devi, Helen, Lily, Leo, Bhalla, Baburao, Kitty, King Kong, Kundan, Om Prakash, K. N. Singh etc.
The movie as well as the songs of this movie were different from the usual musical fare of Hindi movies. The light hearted songs with their Hinglish lyrics were far ahead of their times. The movie was picturised on foreign locations which was also something of a novelty for a Hindi movies.
Helen played an important role in this movie. I can see that she figured in at least three songs in this movie which is unusual for her. Of course no one is complaining. I suppose this movie would earn an honourable mention in Memsaab’s list of songs that made excellent use of Helen.
Here is a Helen song from this movie which goes “Kenya Uganda Tanganika”. Tanganika incidentally was the old name of Tanzaniya. Yes, this song is that old. It is exactly 50 years old as of now. How time flies !
The song is written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.
The video quality leaves something to be desired and the video length leaves us wanting for more, but I suppose we should be thankful for what is available. It is a song wit a difference and it is a pleasure to listen to this song and watch its picturisation.

Excellent use of Helen indeed and a tragic loss for most of us who will never see the whole thing. I have a copy of it, but it’s mostly unwatchable.

I hope that a decent copy of this movie will surface from the collections of some collector.
