Chupke se dil de de nahin te shor mach jaayegaa

Rajesh Khanna (29 december 2012-18 july 2012) is no more. He breathed his last yesterday. He was just 69 years of age. He was ailing for a few months but we thought that his ailment was nothing more than routine age related problems that everyone with advancing age has to face.

To those who came in late, Rajesh Khanna may be just a name from the past. But to those who lived in the era of late 1960s-early 1970s, he was a phenomenon. His filmy career certainly reads like a fairy tale. He had participated in an all India talent search competition. The winner of the contest was to get breaks in two Hindi movies. The winner was Rajesh Khanna (then knon as Jatin Khanna). He acted in these two movies as a part of his winner’s prize/ The movie goers loved what he saw, and in a matter of a couple of years, Rajesh Khanna had rose to a height than no one before him, or since then, has ever reached. He became a superstar of Hindi movies who was loved by almost everyone who followed Hindi movies.

Rajesh Khanna’s charisma was quite something those days. Every movie that Rajesh Khanna acted in was a sovereign guarantee of success.

Music of the Rajesh Khanna movies was magical. I as a pre teen kid loved to listen to these songs, which were mostly sung by Kishore Kumar, even though I was often unaware about the details of the movie.

“Chupke se dil de de nahin te shor mach jaayegaa” was an immensely popular song of 1971. For all its popularity, I was not aware about the name of the movie and other details. But that did not matter, of course. I in fact did not even watch the video of the song till a few years back. It was only then that I came to know that the song was from “Maryada” (1971) and that it was picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Mala Sinha.

Here is this delightful song from “Maryada” (1971). It is sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata with gusto. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

Lyrics

Ae

shor mach jaayegaa
shor mach jaayegaa
chupke se dil de de

oy main ho gayi badnaam
te na soch
tu bach jaayegaa

ho o o o
o o o o o
arre o o o o
jaise raat akele mein
kyaa
milte hain chaand chakori
ho chhup chhup ke mil jaana
kahaan
sapnon mein aa ke o gori
dekh o dilbarjaani
bol
preet meri deewaani
wo to hai
chhod ye prem kahaani
nahin te
shor mach jaayegaa

aha
chupke se dil de de
nahin te
shor mach jaayegaa
haan shor mach jaayegaa
oy main ho gayi badnaam
te na soch
tu bach jaayegaa
shor mach jaayegaa

lai lai lai
lalala
lalala
lalala
laaa

o o o o
o o o o o o
aa aa aa aa
chaahe jo bhi ho jaaye
kyaa
mujhe pyaar nahin karna hai
na na na
mar jaana hai chup rehke
tauba tauba
iqraar nahin karna hai
maan le mera kehna
baad mein phir na kehna
dekh mila le naina
nahin te
shor mach jaayega
chupke se dil dai de
nahin te
shor mach jaayegaa
haan shor mach jaayegaa
oy main ho gayi badnaam
te na soch
tu bach jaayegaa
shor mach jaayegaa

oy hoy hoy
ho ho ho
ho ho ho
ho ho ho
ho ho
lalala
lalala
lalalalalalaa

Two of his trademark signatures:
(A) his gestures with his hands e.g. spinning his hands and forearms around each other.
(B) Rhythmically shaking the head and gently lowering the eyelids as he is offering an invitation.
These things can’t duplicated.
Rajesh ji, enjoy eternal peace.

Waqt Waqt ki baat hai. When Rajesh was popular, he was very very popular.

Kya zamana tha!
