Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai

Anniversaries of artists often serve as wake up call in this blog. It galvanises me as well as the contributors of this blog into action and many of the well known songs which had not appeared get lined up for inclusion in the blog.
On the occasion of Mukesh’s death anniversary today (27 august), lots and lots of Mukeh songs , well known as well as obscure, will be covered. That way, today is an important day in adding more songs to our already impressive collection of Mukesh songs in the blog. As many as 478 Mukesh spongs have been covered in the blog till now.
Here is an extremely well known Mukesh song- very much a “how come this song was not discussed earlier” genre of song. As is the case with most other well known songs, I was under the impression that this song was already discussed in the blog, but it turns out that I was wrong.
Better late than never. Here is the title song of “Kabhi Kabhi”(1976). This song in fact has two versions- viz Mukesh solo version and Mukesh-Lata duet version. The Mukesh solo version is pictuised on Amitabh Bachchan and Raakhi. The duet version is picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Rakhi.
Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Khayyam.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Peevesie’s Mom.

Lyrics(Provided by Peevesie’s mom)
Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
kabhi kabhi mere dil main khayaal aata hai
ke jaise tujhko banaaya gaya hai mere liye
ke jaise tujhko banaaya gaya hai mere liye
tu ab se pehle sitaaron mein bas rahi thhi kahin
tu ab se pehle sitaaron mein bas rahi thhi kahin
tujhe zameen pe bulaaya gaya hai mere liye
tujhe zameen pe bulaaya gaya hai mere liye
kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
ke ye badan ye nigaahen meri amaanat hain
ke ye badan ye nigaahen meri amaanat hain
ye gesuon ki ghani chhaaon hain meri khaatir
ye honthh aur ye baahein meri amaanat hain
ye honthh aur ye baahein meri amaanat hain
kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khaayal aata hai
ke jaise bajati hain shehnaaiyaan si raahon mein
ke jaise bajati hain shehnaaiyaan si raahon mein
suhaag raat hai ghoonghat uthha raha hoon main
suhaag raat hai ghoonghat uthha raha hoon main
simat rahi hai tu sharma ke apni baahon mein
simat rahi hai tu sharma ke apni baahon mein
kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khaayal aata hai
ke jaise tu mujhe chaahegi umr bhar yoon hi
uthhegi meri taraf pyaar ki nazar yoon hi
main jaantaa hoon ke tu gair hai magar yoon hi
main jaantaa hoon ke tu gair hai magar yoon hi
kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai

Duet version is picturised on “Shashi Kapoor and Rakhi”, not on “Mukesh and Rakhi” as mentioned in the write up.
“Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai, ke jaise Atulji ne iss blog ko banaayaa hai mere liye”
there is third version…
Sahirji himself is singing.
This is a great poem by Saahir ludhianvi. We are familiar with the famous film song, but the original I heard for the first time. Only sahir could have written ‘hayaa cheekhti phirti hai birahna sar…..” .
Nahmji,
I like Sahir version …Amitabh version is a cheap novelette of the originals.
There is another version of this song with different lyrics, recited by Amitabh Bachchan in his own voice in the film.
Lyrics ( on the basis of the video clip) :
kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aataa hai
ki zindagi teri zulfon ki narm chhaaon mein
guzarane paati to shaad aab ho bhi sakti thhi
yah ranz-o-gham ki syaayi jo dil pe chhaayi hai
teri nazar ki shuaaon mein kho bhi sakti thhi
magar ye ho na sakaa
magar ye ho na sakaa aur ab ye aalam hai
ki tu nahin
teraa gham teri justuzoo bhi nahin
guzar rahi hai kuchh is tarah zindagi jaise
ise kisi ke sahaare ki aarzoo bhi nahin
na koi raah
na manzil
na roshni kaa suraag
bhathak rahi hai andheron mein zindagi meri
inhin andheron mein rah jaaungaa kabhi kho kar
main jaantaa hoon mere hamnafas
magar youn hi
kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aataa hai
kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aataa hai

Amitabh’s recital is dissapointing, if we hear it before or after Saahir’s recital (link given @ no.4 by derubalaji). Origiinal poem is so much more, satirical and even incisive than the watered down version used in the filmy situation.

Hey Ram! What a feast for me! Mukesh will always be my favourite singer! By the way, there’s this little known song from ‘Char Diwari’…”Kaise manau tiyewa, gun mere ek hu nahi…” How well he has sung this song! ‘Char Diwari’, released in 1961 was a superb movie! Salil-da was the music director….
