Matlab jo samjhe mere sandes ka

Posted on: September 14, 2012

“Baarood”(1976) was a Jugnu Enterprise movie. It was produced by H S Bhattacharya, J C Bhagat and Jitu Thakur. The movie was directed by Pramod Chakravarty.

The movie had Rishi Kapoor, Shoma Anand, Ashok kumar,Ajit, Reena Roy,Prem Chopra, Madan Puri, Dr.Sriram lagoo,Sujit kumar, David Abraham, Raj Mehra,Asit Sen, Master Raju shreshtha,Rajendranath, Om Shivpuri, Manmohan, Birbal, Asrani,Azaad with Dharmendra and Hema Malini in special appearances.

The USP of this movie was that it was picturised extensively in foreign locations (Europe) and it was publicised as such too. Most people, including me, were not impressed with such publicity. I in fact did not watch this movie because I found the story line (that I found out from magazines) too juvenile.

I had the same low opinion about the songs of this movie too. Now, with the passage of nearly 36 years, I find that the songs of those era, including the songs of this movie are considered as classics. :)

The most well known song from “Baarood” (1976) was the song ” matlab jo samjhe mere sandesh ka”. It was sung by Kishore Kumar and it was picturised on Rishi Kapoor who is seen wooing Shoma Anand (who made her Hindi movie debut with this movie) in European locations.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

Haa

bada hi khoobsoorat
is jagah ka har nazaara hai,
hey
magar phir bhi kisi ka naam lekar
dil pukaara hai

hmmm
matlab jo samjhe mere sandes ka
matlab jo samjhe
matlab jo samjhe mere sandes ka
is des mein hai koi kya mere des ka
matlab samjhe jo mere sandes ka

yeh chehre yeh aankhen
Yeh chehre yeh aankhen
badle libaas
rang roop to wohi hai
yaadon ki wo chhaon dhoop to wohi hai
badle libaas
rang roop to wohi hain
yaadon ki wo chhaaon dhoop to wohi hai
kya faayda
kya faayda phir is bhes ka
is des mein hai koi kya mere des ka
matlab samjhe jo mere sandes ka

wo maati wo paani,
wo maati wo paani,
aa milke phoolon ki baatein karenge
saawan ke jhoolon ki baatein karenge
aa milke phoolon ki baatein karenge
saawan ke jhoolon ki baatein karenge
milke sahein
milke sahein yeh gham pardes ka
is des mein hai koi kya mere des ka
matlab samjhe jo mere sandes ka
matlab jo samjhe mere sandes ka
is des mein hai koi kya mere des ka
matlab samjhe jo mere sandes ka

I had a vague rememberence of the story. Its story line and some of the scenes, that of holding Seema captive in an island, were freely lifted from a hollywood movie.

`Badle libaas rang roop toh wahi hai, Yaadon ki wo chhaon dhoop toh wahi hai’ and `Milke sahein yeh gham pardes ka’ are the lines that I love in this song from what I remembered was a particularly disturbing movie. Felt the same way when we watched this movie recently.
`Dil kaanton mein uljhaya hai’ and `Samundar, Samundar’ were two lovely Lata numbers and `Tu shaitanon ka sardar hai’ (Mukesh and Sushma Shreshtha duet) was another lovable song. The one Asha Bhosle number seemed to have RDB’s touch, but maybe it’s just my imagination.
Thank you for featuring this song.
