Aayi gori Raadhika Brij mein bal khaati

Posted on: September 25, 2012

“Gopinath” (1948) is by now a forgotten movie. This movie was a Shanti Lok Chitra Production. It was produced by Brij Kishore Agrawal and directed by Mahesh Kaul. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Tripti Mitra, Nand Kishore, Latika, Niranjan Tiwari, Mahesh Kaul, Randhir etc in it.

Here is a song from this movie that people may be aware of without knowing its details because this song has inspired other songs of this genre, including the song of “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” (1978), viz. Yashomati mayya se bole Nandlala.

This song of “Gopinath” (1948) is sung by Ninu Majumdar and Meena Kapoor. The lyrics are traditional and they are attributed to the blind poet Soordas who lived several hundred years ago. Music is composed by Ninu Majumdar.

The lady lip syncing in Meena Kapoor’s voice is Tripti Mitra. Mr Sadanand Kamath, who sent me the lyrics of this song, informs me that Tripti Mitra was the wife of the famous Bengali theatre personality, Shoumbu Mitra who directed ‘Jagte Raho’ (1956) with Amit Mitra. The male actor lip syncing in Ninu Majumdar’s voice is unidentified though and I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify him.

It is nice to listen to a song sung by Ninu Majumdar who was otherwise mainly known as a music director.

Beautiful song!

Does that mean the song “Yashomati maiyya se bole Nandlala” was lifted? Or is this tune popular for bhajans?

I have similar queries about the bhajan “Om Jai Jagdish Hare” from Purab aur Paschim. I have heard that being sung with due gusto during aartis, but I don’t know if the bhajan precedes the movie or succeeds it.

Om Jai Jagdeesh Hare is indeed sung with gusto during those occasions. :)

Surdas bhajan mostly associated with gopi yantra (EKTARA), his bhajan has the typical repetitive style.
Composer Mazmudar was the first to bring Surdas style in the film music with this song.

Actually Meena Kapoor has sang more duet with Ninu Muzmdar than any other artists.
Few months after SSS released, RK had chance to meet kaumudi munshi at some private gethering…and he asked her if she remember, ayi gori radhika..composed by her husband.Than he told everybody that he liked that song so much that he had to re-used that tune. As per Laxmi-pyare, Laxmi always said that he suggested Yosomati maiya song to RK when he sang to him on phone
RK was hire in this film just becuase producer of this film like him and he was a son of PK..

Atul ji,

GOPINATH-1948 was a Shanti lok Chitra film.It was produced and
Directed by Mahesh Kaul, who not only wrote its story,s/play and
dialogues,but also acted in it.
The music was by Ninu Muzumdar and lyrics by Ram murthy
Chaturvedi. There were 9 songs in the film, including 2 Bhajans of
Meerabai and Surdas each.
The cast was Raj Kapoor,Tripti Mitra,Latika,Randhir,Anwari Bai,Sachin
Ghosh etc.
This was a story of Gopi, who is an orphan in the house of Mohan. She is
abandoned by her only brother.Gopi loves Mohan, but Mohan loves Neela
Devi,an actress.
Gopi is frustrated and is mad, when Mohan returns to her after getting
fed up and disillusioned by Neela Devi.
I saw this movie in its II run in early 50s,but I had my notes on this
movie.
Although some critics had actually luaded Raj Kapoor’s performance in this film, I felt that Tripti had outclassed RK in this film.
The DVD/CD of this film is difficult to get but all the songs are available for the lovers.
