Today (30 september) is the birth anniversary of Pt Feroz Dastoor (30 september 1919 – 9 may 2008). Very little information is available about him today but I came across a very informative article on him here.
Feroz Dastoor’s father, a National Champion of Billiards and a music enthusiast used to invite a renowned musician to his home once in a year and would also invite well places individuals to watch the performance. Before the main performance, the young Feroz Dastoor was asked to open the programme by singing.
Feroz Dastoor sang in one such programme. One member of the audience was J B H Wadia, owner of the Wadia Movietone who at that time was making his first movie under his newly formed banner. He offered Feroz Dastoor the opportunity to sing a song in that movie called “Laal e Yaman” (1933). Those were days before playback, so Feroz Dastoor’s song was recorded live. J B H Wadia was so pleased by Feroz Dastoor’s performance that he asked him to sing more songs for the movie and he also gave him as a role in the movie. Thus Feroz Dastoor became an actor and singer at a tender age of around 13 or so.
Here is the song that Feroz Khan first sang for “Laal e Yaman” (1933) which so pleased J B H Wadia. This song is written by Munshi Aashiq. Music was composed by Joseph david and Master Mohammad. I presume that the song was picturised on Feroz Dastoor himself.
I am thankful to the person who posted the informative article after interviewing Feroz Dastoor which made me aware of a glorious phase of the early days of Hindi movie music.
I have not been able to get the lyrics to my full satisfaction. I request our knowledgeable readers with keener ears to point out the missing/ correct words in the lyrics.

This song must have recorded when he was hardly 13-14 hence the child-like voice. I did not know that he playback also. I have attended his few classical singing programmes in Pune/Mumbai
