Sun le Baapu ye paighaam

Posted on: October 2, 2012

Today (2 october) is Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. Mahatma Gandhi (2 october 1869- 30 january 1948), who is regarded as the Father of the nation was arguably one of the the greatest and most influential human beings of the modern era of mankind. Two of the movements that he initiated had Global application. They are Anti colonialism and Anti apartheid. Another major movement that he championed was anti touchability against a uniquely Indian social practice. All these movemnents have today become full fledged movements with official approval.

Mahatma Gandhi was a man of global stature and his birthday is celebrated all over the world. In India it is one of the major holidays, at par with Indian Independence day and Indian Republic day.

There are a few songs about Baapu (As Mahatma Gandhi was affectionately called) in Hindi movies. A few of them have been discussed in the past. Here is one more such song.

This song is from “Baalak” (1969). “Baalak” (1969) was a Kala Mandal Production. It was directed by Adarsh. The movie had Dhumal, Jaymala, Master Suraj (Baby Saarika), Dev Dutt, Manmohan Krishna, Shyama, Jeevan, Abhi Bhattacharya, Hiralal, Jagdeep, Mehmood Junior, Chand Usmani, Bipin Gupta, Jayshree T etc in it.

The song is a stage song where a school kid sings about writing a letter to Baapu and tells him how his teachings are not being followed in the country and how his so called followers are distorting his teachings for their own personal benefits.

This song is sung by Lata Suman Kalyanpur. It is picturised on Baby Saarika , who was credited as Master Suraj in this movie. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Dattaram.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Sun le Baapu ye paighaam (Baalak)(1969) Singer-Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Dattaram

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

sun le baapu ye paighaam
meri chitthi tere naam
chitthi mein sab se pehle
likkhta tujh ko raam raam
likkhta tujh ko raam raam
sun le baapu ye paighaam
meri chitthi tere naam
chitthi mein sab se pehle
likkhta tujh ko raam raam
likkhta tujh ko raam
sun le baapu ye paighaam
meri chitthi tere naam

kaala dhan kaala vyaapaar
rishwat ka hai garam baazaar
satya ahinsa kare pukaar
toot gaya charkhe ka taar
tere anshan satyaagrah ke
badal gaye asli bartaav
ek nayi vidyaa upjee hai
jisko kehte hain gheraav
teri kathin tapasya ka
ye kaisa niklaa hai anjaam
chitthi mein sab se pehle
likkhta tujh ko raam raam
likkhta tujh ko raam
sun le baapu ye paighaam
meri chitthi tere naam

praant praant se takraata hai
bhaasha par bhaasha ki laat
main panjabi tu bangali
kaun kare Bharat ki baat
teri Hindi ke paaon mein
angrezee ne daali dor
teri lakdi thhagon ne thhag lee
teri bakri le gaye chor
sabarmati sisakti teri
tadap raha hai sewagraam
chitthi mein sab se pehle
likkhta tujh ko raam raam
likkhta tujh ko raam
sun le baapu ye paighaam
meri chitthi tere naam

ram rajya ki teri kalpana
udi hawaa mein ban ke kapoor
bachchon ne padh likhna chhoda
tod phod mein hai magroor
neta ho gaye dal badlu
desh ki pagadi rahe uchhal
tere poot bigad gaye baapu
daaru bandhi huyi halaal
tere razjghaat par phir bhi
phool chadhaate subah o shaam
chitthi mein sab se pehle
likkhta tujh ko raam raam
likkhta tujh ko raam
sun le baapu ye paighaam
meri chitthi tere naam

What is really sad is that everyone remembers Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October but none remembers Lal Bahadur Shastri who too was born on this day. Which is why I love the Lata number from ‘Parivar’…”Aaj hai do Aktoober ka din, aaj ka din hai bada mahan…”

Atulji,
Singer is Suman Kalyanpur.
Maniji,
That song is already posted. Wish there were more songs on Shastriji also. It’s sad that we don’t have any solo on him. In few other patrIotIc songs, you would see hIs pIcture only, but uska naam nahIn bolte thhe. LIke In the song Mere desh kI dhartI sona ugle ugle………Yaad to main bhi dono ko karti hoon. My father still will remember his last words”Lalita (I hope I am right remembering his wife’s name) main ghar aa raha hoon” aur ye kahene ke baad mere pitaji ki aankh bhig jaati hai ki uska sirf sharir hi aaya. Ye Pariwar ka gaana radio pe bhi aata thha..

During 1950-1956, Lal Bahadur Shastri was railway and transport minister. In year 1956 there was an accident of train and 150 people died. Soon after that Lal Bahadur Shastri resigned.
Nehru praised him in next parliament meeting.
