Pyaar mein jeena pyaar mein marna

Posted on: November 8, 2012

These days, we talk about the fact that the Hindi music touched its lowest point in 1980s before staging some recovery in 1990s. But how did one feel about this fact while living through the era of 1980s ?

For me, 1980 was the decade when I began to lose track of Hindi movies and Hindi movie songs and finally things went blank the way some movie characters suffer a blackout. Those movie characters may recover after they listen to a song and may exclaim -“mujhe sab kuchh yaad aa gaya..” but that stage seems far away for me. :) I may remember what happened during 1970s vis a vis Hindi moviees and their magic, but I have no such recollections about Hindi movies and their magic from the more recent decades. And I also realised just now that I may not have watched even ten movies in movie halls in the current millenium. And wonder of wonders, I have not watched even one movie in multiplexes till now !

Before a few readers decide to come and visit me to see how someone like me can be still around in this day and time, I assure you that I still have some memories from the early years of 1980s. It was the decade of disco music. Disco music had become a fashion the way wearing bell bottoms used to be the fashion a few years ago. But while the fashion of wearing bell bottoms would last barely a year or so, the craze for disco music lasted quite a few years. I had a mind of my own even thoise days and I did not like all the disco songs that were all the rage. I disliked the “disco” music of Biddu in “Qurbaani” (1981) and in a few other movies in its wake. Even then I could see that this music was all style with not much real content within and that sooner or later this fade was going to wear off.

To take the example of T20 cricket from the present age, one can say that disco music of 1980s was like the present day T20 cricket or let us say IPL. I maintained then that public were being taken for a ride by disco music and now I feel the same way about IPL. I was proved right about disco music and I see no reason why I will not be proved right about IPL too. I have followed cricket for nearly as long as I have followed Hindi movie music and I (like Raja) was a determined amateur statistician of test cricket records during my days.

I feel that cricketers with solid technique are likely to success at the less classical formats like T20. I felt the same way about disco music of 1980s too. I am not surprised if some IPL “superstars” are found out in the more classical formats of the game. Disco music of 1980s too had seen a few such “singers” who managed to have some passing success before their lack of ability got exposed.

It is not that I disliked all the disco songs of 1980s. There were several songs of those days that had me mesmerised then and these songs continue to have the same effect on me even today.

The song “Pyaar mein jeena pyaar mein marna” from “Do Ustaad” (1982) was one such song. I find this song a magical song even today.

This song is sung by Usha Uthup. It is picturised on Kalpana Iyer, with Narendranath, Jagdeep, Dev Kumar, Mukri, Oscar Unger and Shatrughan Sinha also visible.

It was felt that lyrics had become irrelevant with the advent of disco songs. But one still needed lyrics that would make sense to the music lovers and which the music lovers would found hummable. Verma Malik has done a nice job coming up with the lyrics of the song that complement the disco beats of the song admirably.

Music is composed by the great man himself, the one and only Bappi Lahiri ! :)

The reason why this song, despite being a disco song has managed to remain popular is simple. The people involved in it were no fly by night disco music operators (unlike a few who emerged those days to join the disco bandwagon) but had cut their musical teeth practicing in the more classical form of music and they had skills that went beyond what was needed to create disco songs. And that is the secret behind the longevity of this song.

This is a very long song, nearly eight minutes long song, and I find the entire song quite enjoyable to listen to. It is exactly 30 years ago that this song had hit the airwaves and had begun to blare through the loudspeakers. Celebrating Saraswati Puja by collecting “chanda” was (still is) the practice in many parts of the country including where I was growing up. I recall that we had hired a record player with loudspeaker on this occasion and I was the incharge of playing songs on the loudspeaker at full volume in night time. :) And this song was one of my favourite songs to be played on the occasion. So when I say that this song blared from loudspeakers then I say so with first hand information. :) And in case people accuse me of playing an inappropriate song for a religious occasion, may I point out that this song has the word “Radhe Shyam” in it as many as 54 times ! Show me another song that chants the name of gods so many times. :)

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Today (8 november) happens to be Usha Uthup’s birthday. Here is this iconic disco song from 1980s on this occasion.
