O sun sun sun jeenewaale

Posted on: December 3, 2012

This article is written by Peevesie’s Mom, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I can not believe that one year has elapsed since the passing away of Dev Anand. It was a shocking news on that Saturday morning one year ago. My parents had come to visit me and dad is a huge fan of the Dev-Dilip-Raj triumvirate. I had heard this news in the early morning bulletin and conveyed it to my father who had just left for a sight seeing trip. And I conveyed the news as one would convey the bad news about any family member or relative the minute one hears of it. Such was the craze for this charming man that I shared with my dad. Mine was a case more of loving his movies and songs. I do not know exactly when I became aware of Dev Anand movies or songs. But it withered away after I saw his last movie “Censor” on TV (I suppose). After that I gave up keeping track of any Navketan Movie. Even my dad gave up on him. In fact my dad had given up on him in the 1980’s itself. But any way this is not meant to bring down the greatness or the charm of the man. Its just an out pouring of the heart.

We seemed to have covered a large number of Dev Anand movies on our blog. But his later movies are absent here. Largely because these movies hardly had any popular songs. Or we might have heard the songs but as Atul puts it without being aware of their details. That is why I thought we will have a song from “Swami Dada”. Going by what IMDB says this movie released on 3rd December 1982. It’s a matter of sheer coincidence isn’t it?

Swami Dada (1982) star Dev Anand, Naseeruddin Shah, Mithun Chakravarty, Rati Agnihotri, Sushma Seth, Naaz, Shakti Kapoor, Padmini Kolhapure and Jackie Shroff in a miniscule role. He introduced us to Christine O’Neil. No information isavailable on the net about this actress.

The synopsis of this movie is thus (taken from IMDB)

Hari Mohan is a saintly person who organizes Hindu prayers and discourses in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. He is called “Swami Dada” by everyone. He has many followers, and devotees who throng in large numbers to hear his sermons. What they do not know that Hari Mohan is a professional thief, and is now conspiring with a young woman, and a group of orphaned children to steal the temple jewellery.

This song here is set in an ashram where the Swami played by Dev Anand is teaching the lesson to a happy life. He seems to be performing miracles too as we see a dumb Naaz begin to sing with the public. The movie was an ok kind of movie. I have not seen it but this song stays in my mind for the last many many years. Basically I like its quality of being inspiring. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar, Anette Pinto, Lata Mangeshkar and chorus. Its music is by Dev Anand’s trusted RD Burman. I think the lyrics were by Anand Bakshi. (It is by Anjaan)

Even I can’t believe its a year now that Dev Anand has passed away. I don’t think I will ever stop mourning his death. Luckily we have many many many beautiful movies to remember him by.

Thank you Peevesie` mom ji for introducing the song, which I never heard, only had seen the visuals.

I know another song from the movie:Asha Bhosle :”Pattakaa phuljhadi” picturised on Padmini Kolhapure and thought of posting the lyrics on Padmini Kolhapure`s birthday, but unknowingly kept it with myself without sending it.

Lyrics are by Anjaan
Please correct it Atul ji

Link to to the vinyl record of the movie:
