Tu kahaan kho gaya baalam matwaara

Posted on: December 17, 2012

Bar dance in Hindi movies began in 1950s. These dances typically were “western” in nature and they were mostly performed by dancers like Cuckoo, Helen, etc. There were cases when leading ladies like Geeta Bali, Madhubala etc too would perform such bar dances. Such dances were popularly known as cabarat dance.

But what about a sari clad lady performimg a desi dance in the bar ? If one wondered whether we have any song like this, the the answer is in the affirmative.

Here is that kind of bar dance. This song is from “Singapore” (1960). The song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Padmini, who is accompanied by others, including Agha, who is dressed as a south Indian percussionist playing an instrument meant to be played in classical concerts.

The song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri. Music, which combines desi music with videsh music- is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Tu kahaan kho gaya baalam matwaara (Singapore)(1960) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

arrey tu kahaan kho gaya baalam matwaara
main dhoondoon tujhe galiyaan aur chaubaara
tu kahaan kho gaya baalam matwaara
main dhoondoon tujhe galiyaan aur chaubaara
tu kahaan kho gaya baalam matwaara
main dhoondoon tujhe galiyaan aur chaubaara

raahen takin aaya na tu
darwaaze baith kar hum ne to raat bhar
poochha tujhe taaron se bhi
o mere fitna-gar waade gaye guzar
phir bhi hai dil mein mohabbat jawaan
ke jale nas nas mein angaara
main dhoondoon tujhe galiyaan aur chaubaara
tu kahaan kho gaya baalam matwaara
main dhoondoon tujhe galiyaan aur chaubaara

naachti phiroon tere liye
naye naye bhes mein
anjaane des mein
paayal mein hain naghme tere
ulfat ka raaz hai mere sandes mein
baaghon ki hirni main aayi kyun yahaan
ke lage kaanta sa jag saara
main dhoondoon tujhe galiyaan aur chaubaara
tu kahaan kho gaya baalam matwaara
main dhoondoon tujhe galiyaan aur chaubaara

koyal bani morni bani
sab kuchh bani hoon piya
main tere pyaar mein
nainon ke do deepak liye
dhoondha karoon main tujhe
baagh-o-bahaar mein
duniya na samjhe meri daastaan
ho de ja zakhmi dil ko sahaara
main dhoondhoon tujhe galiyaan aur chaubaara
tu kahaan kho gaya baalam matwaara
main dhoondhoon tujhe galiyaan aur chaubaara
tu kahaan kho gaya baalam matwaara
main dhoondhoon tujhe galiyaan aur chaubaara
