Aa raat jaati hai

Posted on: February 9, 2013

In olden days, many relations were one sided relations in real as well as reel lives. For instance, it was a seller’s market then and the buyer had to be content with whatever he got. In education, teacher would teach and the pupils would listen. Pupils were discouraged from asking questions in case they had any doubts.

This happened in Hindi movie songs too, especially in case of party/ get together songs. In this songs, the singers/dancers.performers would sing/ dance /perform and the others were required to stand still, under strict instructions not to participate in the festivities.

Now a days, things have changed a lot. Now sellers compete with each other to woo the buyers. Teachers encourage pupils to actively participate in the classroom.

And in case of Hindi movie party/ get together songs, the other invitees too are encouraged to actively participate these days.

When it came to Helen dance songs, most of these songs were old school songs in the sense that Helen was often the solo active participant in those songs. So I am quite fascinated by this Helen dance song from “Benaam” (1974). Here Helen begins the dance performance and soon seeks participation from her audience. “Why are you silent, come sing with me”- she invites Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan begins to actively participate by lip syncing in Rafi’s voice, and the others too begin to lip sync in the voice of chorus. Mausamai Chatterji, Amitabh Bachchan’s companion does not like it one bit though. Old school that she is, her mood goes from bad to worse as the song progresses and by the end of the song she stages a walk out from the gathering.

I feel that this most be one of the very few Helen songs with active participation from others as well. That way this song was ahaed of its time, though this fact seemed to have escaped everone’s attention. :)

This song Asha Bhonsle-Rafi duet from “Benaam” (1974) is penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by R D Burman. while paying attention to the lyrics, I could not help but bbe amazed by the creativity that Majrooh Sultanpuri was capable of in that he could come up with such interting and original lyrics for this standard theme in which hundreds of songs were already written in the past.

I had watched this movie during its second run in 1980 but I did not remember this song at all. In fact I was surprised to realise that Helen was there in this movie. But then she was there in every Hindi movie of those days. :)

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

Aa raat jaati hai
chupke se mil jaayen dono
chalke kahin apni aag mein jal jaayen dono
aa raat jaati hai
chupke se mil jaayen dono
chalke kahin apni aag mein jal jaaye donon

arre aap kyun chhup hain
aayiye
hamaare saath gayiye naa

mauqaa bhi hai aarzoo bhi
lag jaa tu mere galey se
rangeen si bekhudi mein
ho jaa mujhe saath leke
ye beqaraari kaa mausam
ye saans letaa andheraa
yoon daal zulfon ke saaye
phir naa kabhi ho saveraa

haathon mein ye haath leke
machal jaayen donon
do rang jaise ke milte hain
mil jaayen dono

aa raat jaati hai
chupke se mil jaayen dono
la la la la la la la
chal ke kahin apni aag mein jal jaayen dono
aa raat jaati hai
chupke se mil jaayen dono

la la la la la laa
chal ke kahin apni aag mein jal jaaye donon

pyaale mein kya hain mujhe to
apne labon ki pilaa de
bujh naa sakey jo umar bhar
wo pyaas tu hi bujhaa de
nazdeek tu itni aa jaa
la la la laa
seene mein badh jaaye halchal
ru ru ru ru
ru ru

deke badan kaa sahaara
la la la laa
mujhko udaaye liye chal
ru ru ru ru ru ru
kho jaayen aise ki phir naa
sambhal paaye dono
tadpen kuchh aaj iss tarah ke
behal jaaye dono

ru ru ru ru
ru ru

aa raat jaati hai
chupke se mil jaaye dono
la la la la la laa
chalke kahin apni aag mein jal jaaye dono
aa raat jaati hai
chupke se mil jaaye dono

la la la la la la la la
chalke kahin apni aag mein jal jaaye dono
la la la la la laa
aa raat jaati hai
chupke se mil jaayen dono

la la la la la laa
chalke kahin apni aag mein jal jaayen dono
