Leja leja leja mera dil

Posted on: March 7, 2013

“An Evening in Paris” (1967) was produced and directed by Shakti Samanta. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, K N Singh, Rajendra Nath, Pran, Sarita, David Abraham, M B Shetty, Surendra Nath etc in it.

As many as eight songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the ninth and final song from this movie. This song is a club song. It is sung by Sharda. It is picturised as a club song on Sharmila Tagore and a bunch of foreigner dancers in keeping with the title of the movie according to which the events in the movie are supposed to take place at Paris.

Shailendra is the lyricist and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

It is a song that I had never heard/ watched before. After a couple of listening/ watching this song I find the song growing up on me.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

There are a few French words in the lyrics that have remained undeciphered and they are marked as ?? ??. I request our French savvy readers to fill in the missing words in the lyrics.

With this song, “An Evening in Paris” (1967) joins the growing list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog. This is the 224th such movie in the blog.

The French words are…”Venez-ici, ma cherie, venez-ici ma cherie, venez-ici..” and it means “Come here, my friend, come here, my friend, come here..” But whoever penned the lines, goofed up French grammar! Like Hindi that has two words for ‘my’… ‘mera’ and ‘meri’, French too has ‘mon’ and ‘ma’ depending on the gender. Likewise, the words for ‘friend’ are ‘cher’ and ‘cherie’ depending on the gender. Sharada sings, “Venez-ici, ma cherie’ that literally translates as, ” Yahan aaiye, meri saheli…”! And Sharmila Tagore is addressing this song to Shammi Kapoor!! Khair chodiye! Galathiyan sabse hothi hai, hai ki nahi?

Thank for this valuable information Mani ji

Regards
Prakash

In any case, ‘An Evening in Paris’ was a ‘paisa vasool’ movie with excellent songs, Shammi Kapoor’s wooing and dancing with Sharmila Tagore and a lot of ‘dishum dishum’ with Pran.

Mani :) That is great. Choti moti galti. I am sure the French have a great laugh when they hear the song, it they understand it at all.

I love this movie to bits as well. Paisa vasool :)

Yippeeee! another movie joins the ranks of movies where all songs have been covered :) .
