Meri saheliyaan byaahi gayin saari

Posted on: March 8, 2013

This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Four songs of “Teesra Kaun” (1965) have already been discussed on this blog. Three of them with lyrics provided by Prakashchandra. Lyrics of the other songs of this movie were also provided by him sometime back.

Here is the fifth and final song from this movie. Here the singer is Suman Kalyanpur, quite an uncommon singer for the Burmans.

The song is a mehndi ceremony song, where the bride and her friends get together for fun and frolics. This seems to be the wedding of the hero’s sister, where he will be later accused of robbing the family jewels.

Kalpana, who also seems to be a friend of the bride, dances to this song, while lamenting the fact that all her friends have got married except her. The lyrics might have their origin in some women folk song, which were sung during such ceremonies. Such folk songs are a good mirror to the situation of women in the society. Here for example the discrimination based on skin colour is highlighted.

The comedienne Indira Bansal can be also seen as one of the bride’s friends.

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

meri saheliyaan byaahi gayin saari
meri saheliyaan byaahi gayin saari
haay main reh gayi kunwaari
haay haay raamaa, haay main reh gayi kunwaari
meri saheliyaan byaahi gayin saari
meri saheliyaan byaahi gayin saari
haay main reh gayi kunwaari
haay haay raamaa, haay main reh gayi kunwaari

pichhle baras gayi kamlaa ki doli
ab ke saritaa baalmaa ki ho li
pichhle baras gayi kamlaa ki doli
ab ke saritaa baalmaa ki ho li
naa jaane aayegi kab meri baari
haay main reh gayi kunwaari
haay haay raamaa, haay main reh gayi kunwaari
meri saheliyaan byaahi gayin saari
haay main reh gayi kunwaari

laut ke maike aaye jo sakhiyaan
mujhko sunaayen baalmaa ki batiyaan
laut ke maike aayen jo sakhiyaan
mujhko sunaaye baalmaa ki batiyaan
chal jaaye meri dil pe kataari
haay main reh gayi kunwaari
haay haay raamaa, haay main reh gayi kunwaari
meri saheliyaan byaahi gayin saari
haay main reh gayi kunwaari

hone lagi thhi meri sagaayi
ban than ke saamne saajnaa ke aayi
hone lagi thi meri sagaayi
ban than ke saamne saajnaa ke aayi
bolaa sitamgar ladki hai kaali
haay main reh gayi kunwaari
haay haay raamaa, haay main reh gayi kunwaari
