My my my my my dear

this article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This is a comedy song from film NAGINA-51. The singers are Rafi and Shamshad. This was a Nutan- Nasir Khan film.

Sometime back I finished reading Nutan’s Biography, written by her close friend and noted journalist, Lalita Tamhane. The book is titled ‘ ASEN MEE…NASEN MEE ‘ (I may be…I may not be). Many interesting things which are not well known are mentioned in this book. I will try to describe a part of it, from Nutan’s early career, as I remember. Thanks to Lalita Tamhane-the copyright holder.

After Hamari Beti-1951, her Debut film as a Heroine flopped, Nutan got two more films. One from Dalsukh Pancholi for Nagina and the other from Ranjit for Humlog. She accepted both films.

Luckily, both films did well. After this Nutan did, in quick succession, few other films like Sheesham, Parbat, Laila Majnu and Shabab. But these films proved to be mediocre and poor grocers. Soon she was being branded as an’ unlucky star’. Nutan was just 17 year old then. She had become very thin. Someone advised her mother Shobhana Samarth to send her to Switzerland to regain health and gain weight.( There was a rumour that she had T.B., but this is not corroborated by any credible source).

Accordingly, Nutan’s mother Shobhana Samarth sent Nutan to Switzerland in March 1954. She enrolled in ” La Shattelini Institute for Girls” to do a ” Secretarial course. It is here that Nutan learnt French and later achieved absolute proficiency in it. For many years she used to receive and write letters to her Swiss friends in French language. In Switzerland Nutan was very happy to lead a life which was free from the glitter of show business. She learnt French, English Literature, Book keeping, Shorthand and Typing as well as House keeping.

She had continued her singing practice.(Nutan was a reasonably good singer). When Nutan did her Riaz, her British roommate watched her intently. When Nutan took a difficult Taan, the room mate would sympathisingly say,” I know. I know, how painful it must be” !

In her Institute, she was known only as an Indian and no one knew she was an actress, nor had she disclosed it herself. This created a funny incident once.

Nutan had gone to Italy and Paris, on a study tour cum long term excursion, with other girls. At one place they stopped to see what the crowd was watching. It turned out to be a film shooting. The principal of their Institute, Mr. Jobann, thought that this Indian girl must not have seen what a film shooting is, so he explained to her all the details for over an hour and Nutan quietly nodded all the time !

While studying there, Nutan got a chance to attend a Film Festival at Lokarno. The maharajah of Baria state and his wife came to take Nutan, being family friends of Samarth family. The Principal allowed her a week’s time. In Lokarno she was recognised, photographed and intervied several times. She was afraid of leaking this news to her Institute. Luckily nothing got leaked.

By now Nutan had improved her health and had put on some weight too. Her mother recalled her to India to accept Filmistan’s offer of HEER as well as SEEMA by Amiya Chakraworty. After 8 months in Switzerland, Nutan returned to Bombay and did both the films. She also wrote a long letter to Principal Jobann of the Institute, explaining about her identity and asking his pardon for hiding this fact !

The book in Marathi is extremely interesting. I thank Lalita Tamhane, the copyright holder, for the above information.

Nagina-1951 was Nasir Khan’s First film ,after he fled from Pakistan to India overnight, with only his clothes on, after he was threatened for his life due to his affair with a married woman. After Partition Nasir Khan had migrated to Pakistan and acted as a Hero in Pakistan’s First film ” Teri Yaad”, along with another film. He also had distribution rights of some Dilip Kumar films for Pakistan. When he came back to India, he got some films again. He had married the most beautiful Heroine of those times Begum Para- known for many provocative films in 40s and 50s.

Today’s song features Mohana and Gope in a comic side plot of the film. The song is sung by Rafi and Shamshad Begum.

I propose to post another Gope/Mohana song from this film soon, when I will describe some more stories from Nutan’s book, as I remember.

This was SUCH an interesting read, Arunji. Thank you so much for it. As always, your posts are a goldmine of information and a great pleasure to read.

I am a big fan of Nutan – it was wonderful to read about her experiences in Switzerland. Thank you.

Oh, I forgot to comment about the song. Never heard it before – what a cute song it is. Total timepass. :-)

Interesting information there Arunji! I have read the biography, but had forgotten many details. Thank you!

Arunji,
As with every posts, you have given us very valuable information and new (nutan) stories about an actress, Nutan. Will wait for your next post for some more facts about her film career.
I know only one song, Ae mere hamsafar…. from Chhabili-60, sung by her.

http://atulsongaday.me/2010/09/20/ae-mere-hamsafar/

Here is a YT link for her live performance in Sri Lanka

Nutan sang for a movie called KASTURI(1980-starring Parikshit Sahni, Mithun Chakraborthy,Sadhu Meher,
Director Bimal Dutta,
as per imdb.com there is a song sung by her, I have also had a blurr memory of watching that song in Doordarshan Chitrahaar programme 25 years ago.Doordarshan also telecasted that movie 25 years ago.
But comments under this video clip gives different information alltogether. HELP(Comment tells that it is a song less movie and music provided by Uttam Singh and it was released in the year of 1978)

But I don`t know the starting lyrics of the song sung by Nutan in this movie, Any one know the song lyrics, please help me.
video link of the movie scene:

Prakash ji,
Kasturi was a NFDC film which was a SONGLESS movie indeed. There were 3 songs in the background, but they were folk songs and were not sung by Nutan.
Nutan had sung 4 songs in film Mayoori, directed by Biren Bhattacharya, but it was not released. Nutan had sung songs in CHABILEE too.
