Here is a fun filled song from film ” Laadla “-54.

It is sung by G M Durani and Trilok Kapoor.

Now, this Trilok Kapoor was NOT the actor Trilok Kapoor, who was Prithviraj Kapoor’s brother. Singer Trilok Kapoor never acted in any film. These two are separate persons.

This case is very similar to actor Shyam and singer Shyam kumar. In both cases similar names caused confusion and very often credits were given to the wrong person.

Singer Trilok Kapoor was a refugee-a displaced person from Multan, after the Partition riots. He came to Bombay in search of a singing career. Once there was a chance meeting of Trilok Kapoor with Music Director Shyamsunder. When Shyamsundar learnt about the sad suffering of a fellow Punjabi, who also hailed from his own town, he decided to give an opportunity to him. Thus Trilok Kapoor sang his first song. It was a comedy duet with Shamshad Begum in film Bhai Behan-1950. In the same year Music Director Lachhiram too gave him a comedy song in the film Guru Dakshina. Trilok continued to specialise in comedy songs like in Titlee-51, Daaman-51, Laadla and Miss Mala-54.

Some other films in which he sang were Kashmir, Goonj, Raag Rang, Naya Raasta, Toote Khilaune and lastly in Trolley Driver-58. Then he shifted to Radio singing on A.I.R. His most famous song was a duet with Lata ji-” Karte hai Ishaare” from Raag Rang-52.

A point to note here is that the actor Trilok kapoor- who was the brother of Prithwiraj Kapoor and who specialised in mahadev Shankar roles in Mythological films, had also sung one solo song in Aaj ki Duniya-40 and 5 duets in Raja Rani-42. After this he never ever sang in any film. (inputs from -swaron ki yatra, and Dr. Surjit Singh ji, Jai ji and Anil Hingorani on RMIM).

The other singer in this fun song is Ghulam Mustafa Durani.

G M Durani was born in Peshawar in a Pathan family in 1919. By the time he was 15 year of age, he was singing on A.I.R and his first break came when Sohrab Mody took him in ‘ Sayeed -e-havas’-1936 to sing a song shot on himself. It was a qawwaali. He returned to Radio when no further songs came his way, until 1941 when Naushad gave him 3 songs in ‘Darshan’.

Thus Durrani came into the mainstream and he soon became the first choice of most composers in following years. From 1941 to 1951 he sang more than 500 songs. from time to time he tried to help Rafi and even Lata in getting songs from the producers. He gave up his own songs of Anmol Ghadi and Village Girl in favour of Rafi.

In those days, jealous of his popularity, another well known singer of repute tried to give him ” Sindoor” in Paan, but luckily Durrani spat it out suspecting some foul play and thus was saved.

Slowly, other singers like Rafi, Mukesh, Talat, Kishor and Manna Dey took over and Durrani fell on bad days, financially. He had to sell off his several flats and cars and in his last few years, he had to even run a “Kirana Shop” in Mahim unsuccessfully. Just one month after he sang an old sang to an encouraging audience at the time of Noorjahan’s India visit in 1982, he was diagnosed with Throat Cancer. After a long fight ,he finally died in penury.

LAADLA was a Verma film production and was Directed by Suryakumar.

Yes, he is the same Suryakumar-the famous Choreographer and Dance Director in several hit films of the 50s and 60s. He had a penchant for appearing in the dances on the screen in many films. During our college days it was our favourite past time to locate Suryakumar in a dance item.

Suryakumar started his film career as assistant in the sound department in Saigal’s last film,’Parwaana’-1947. During this period, yesteryear actress/Dancer Azurie trained him and Krishnakumar in Dancing. In those days the term ‘Chorographer’ was not used. They were simply called ‘Dance masters’ or ‘Dance Directors’.

Actress Azurie had a German father and an Indian mother. She is considered as a pioneer in Film dancing in India. She was so famous in films that Cuckoo modelled herself on her dancing and succeeded. Azurie(1907-1998) trained Suryakumar in dancing.

Suryakumar then assisted Madame Simka(a disciple of Uday Shankar) in the film “Awaara”-1951, when he first directed Helen who was in the chorus of Dancing girls that time. Suryakumar later directed Helen in 31 films. Their last film together was Bombay 405 Miles-1980.

Suryakumar himself also trained Suryanarayana, Oscar and many others. After 1970, Heroines themselves became dancing girls and the roles of Dance masters reduced considerably. Posh Choreographers came on the scene.

Suryakumar had acted in 4 films, Singar-49, Ankh Michauli-49, Har Har Mahadev-74 and Shravankumar-88. He then worked as a Production assistant and as an editor too, before retiring. Laadla was the only film he ever directed.

Normally Chorographers/Dance Directors remain unknown, that is why I have written about him here.

Laadla-54 was called a social film, but looking at its story one would tend to call it a Fantasy film instead, because such stories never happen in life. The cast was Karan Dewan, Shyama, Krishnakumari, Agha, Raj Mehra, S.Nazir, Dar Kashmiri (old name for actor Jeevan), Maruti Sinder etc. Vinod was the music director and there were 10 songs in the film which were written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Kaif Irfani, Balkrishna Mauj and Dev Krishna. The story was—-

Prakash ( Karan Dewan) was a son of a very rich person. He had all the pleasures of life at his beck and call. Precisely this was what bothered him too much and he decided to venture into the world as a nobody to get its experience. In this his companion was Johnny (Agha)- his servant by job, but actually his friend Philosopher and Guide in life.

They come to Bombay and Prakash takes up a job. Here these two meet Nilu(Shyama) and Sheelu(Krishnakumari) and they fall in each other’s love. After a few love songs and scenes etc., one day Prakash meets Motilal(S.Nazeer) and they become thick friends. When Prakash goes to his home, seeing the photographs etc, he realises that Motilal is his long lost brother. Now the usual hitch appears. Both Prakash and Motilal love Nilu. Motilal falls sick in her love and Prakash is in a dilemma whether to opt for Love or Brother ?

Finally, he decided to go away and forget Nilu, so that Motilal gets Nilu. But Nilu makes it clear that she only loves Prakash and NOT Motilal. Motilal hears this and his eyes open wide. He decides to go away to Africa and the problem is solved thus.

Let us now enjoy this very funny song with equally funny Lyrics.

He also sang in Saloni-1952>>> dil de diya hai seene se nikal ke

Trilok Kapoor the actor sang 5 songs as Arunji mentioned in Raja
Rani-1942 with Vandana >> dheere chalo gori, maine tumko dekha ; rani ho tum rani; tum mere jeewan ki asha; mere godi me khelaga lal ho rani;

Nitin ji,
He sang with VANAMALA and not Vandana.

Arunji,
I stand corrected. She is the famous Marathi actress. Thanks
