Ireera raaka aaka ka baaka

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Recently I have requested Sudhir Sir to find a rare Rafi song for me. It is a song which actually brought me to to this blog. It is a non-film song which nobody seems to know anything about. Three years ago I was desperately searching for the full lyrics of this prayer poem ‘Khud jiyo auron ko bhi jeene do’. I searched extensively on the net but could not find the full lyrics. I had no inkling at that time that Rafi sahab had sung this song. But some site (I do not remember which one) had this information that this prayer/poem was by Rafi sahab and it was picturized in a film by Films Division of India, where none other than Prithvi Raj Kapoor is singing it in front of a classroom. There after I searched for it high and dry,but the result was always zilch. Now I have no way of verifying if the information about the song is strictly correct or not. But it was a start and unfortunately also the end of it. All this time this thing has always been in the back of my mind, which comes to fore from time to time. Like it did the other day when I made that request to Sudhir Sir.

I knew it is a tall order. Rafi fans are very zealous about finding rare recordings of him as we see on youtube. But if in case such a song really exists than there is none more able than Sudhir Sir who can find it. I am hoping that he will have some positive news sooner or later. At the same time I am seriously worried that if it turns out to be a wild goose chase, all the effort and trouble of looking for the song will be wasted.

The song I am discussing as ‘I’ song of the A – Z series of Rafi songs is from the film ‘ Do Ustaad ‘ (1959). I had never heard this song on radio but I saw it for the first time on ‘youtube’ some years ago. Since I have started contributing on the blog, many times I looked for a good audio/video which was not available. And the words were all going over my head, the link I found would be so bad. Looking for ‘I ‘ song in the lists I found this song and it seemed a perfect choice for being a rock n roll song by O.P. Nayyar, both were a must for an all qualifying (even if I say so myself :-) ) A-Z list of Rafi sahab’s song.

This one is an all encompassing rock n roll song composed by O. P. Nayyar, and written by Qamar Jalalabadi. Rafi sahab as always is in elements, giving it all he had. This is the movie where Raj Kapoor is the hero and one of the few rare occasions where he is actually singing in Rafi sahab’s voice.

For getting the lyrics right I listened to it twice before actually writing them down. At the beginning I thought there is some chorus also with Rafi sahab. But to my surprise it turns out that no one else here, the lone legend is singing it in so many voices, creating an illusion of more than one singer. It has happened for some other solos too of Rafi sahab. Sometimes it happens that a little a little bit of chorus singing in the background goes unnoticed by me. So I have made double sure that there are no other voices.

Five songs from “Do ustaad’ are posted, so this is the sixth song. So this one was late in arriving but it is my good fortune and a gain for this series and nobody’s loss. This rock and roll song with ‘anokhe bol’ is to be heard to be believed and I am not exaggerating.

Song-Ireera raaka aaka ka baaka (Do Ustaad)(1959) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

ireera raaka
aaka ka baaka
baaka ka daaka
worli ka naaka
duniyaa dhamaaka
qadam qadam pe chhodo
ek pataakha
ireera raaka
aaka ka baaka
baaka ka daaka
ho worli ka naaka
duniyaa dhamaaka
qadam qadam pe chhodo
ek pataakha
haa
ho ho

kaise gareebon ka yeh jeenaa
haay
jale hai dekh dekh seena
haay
kaam to karta boodha kallu
maze se khaaye shambhoo kakaa
ireera raaka
aaka ka baaka
baaka ka daaka
worli ka naaka
duniyaa dhamaaka
qadam qadam pe chhodo
ek pataakha

tumhe jo aata hai jhukaana
jhukegaa laala yeh zamaana
duniyaa hai zaalim
maanegi ussko
jo ho duniya ka chaachaa
ireera raaka
aaka ka baaka
baaka ka daaka
worli ka naaka
duniyaa dhamaaka
qadam qadam pe chhodo
ek pataakha

kaisi nigaahen teri kaafir
haay
raste pe lutaa hai musaafir
haay
aaj tamaasha
ho gayaa ultaa
daaku pe pad gayaa daakaa
haay
ireera raaka
aaka ka baaka
baaka ka daaka
worli ka naaka
duniyaa dhamaaka
qadam qadam pe chhodo
ek pataakha
ha
waah
dho

galiyon mein jhoom jhoom gaata
husn ko ishq sikhaataa
mera gaana
badaa maze ka
rock n roll ka chaacha
ha ha haa he he haa
ireera raaka
aaka ka baaka
baaka ka daaka
worli ka naaka
duniyaa dhamaaka
qadam qadam pe chhodo
ek pataakha

ireera raaka
aaka ka baaka
baaka ka daaka
worli ka naaka
duniyaa dhamaaka
qadam qadam pe chhodo
pataakha
thha thha thha
