Run jhun chhun chhun paayal ke geet lutaati

Posted on: September 27, 2013

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

In September 1988, Doordarshan National channel started telecasting what was to become the stupendously popular serialization of the renowned epic ‘Mahabharat’. And for a period of almost two years (94 Sundays), an audience of almost 20 crore Indians would be glued to the TV sets. And in every episode, the audience was greeted with the rendition of the title song and shlokas, and the every episode was bid good bye with a verse that summarized the story, the state of affairs, and the learnings from the particular episode. These opening and ending title song and verses came through the telecast riding on the booming voice of the one and the only singer who could have made the impact with his voice. His rendition of the opening word ‘Mahaaa-Bhaaarat’ is now etched in the aural memory of the viewers. The voice that had the power to shake a thunder. Mahendra Kapoor – the only voice that could make it happen.

Remembering Mahendra ji on the anniversary of his passing away, this date, five years ago. And occasion also is for the posting of his 200th song on our blog.

Born in 1934, his musical and singing prowess was evident as a child, and he formally learnt classical music Ustad Niaz Ahmed Khan, Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan and Pt.Tulsidaas Sharma. His idol and inspiration was the voice of Rafi Sb. In early 1950s, still in his teens, he would travel to Bombay, to meet his idol, and to seek opportunity in an industry that was transforming and getting well into what is now termed as the Golden Age. Initial opportunities were few and did not quite captured anyone’s attention –couple of songs in the film ‘Madmast’ (1953), then two songs in 1956 (‘Lalkaar’ and ‘Ek Sholaa’).

It was to be in 1958, that people and producers had to sit up and take notice of this young man’s voice. The thundering rendition of the verses “Sohni Aur Mahiwaal Ne Apni Ishq Mein Jaan Ganwaayi” for the song
“Chaand Chhupaa Aur Taare Doobey”. Never before had the cinema theaters boomed with such a voice. It was thanks to Naushad Sb that for this song he decided to get Mahendra Kapoor to sing. And the Hindi cinema found a completely new voice whose range was unmatchable, by any singer that came before or after him.

His active career lasted well over four decades, but like many other singers of his era, he had to be content with performing under the shadow of his
contemporaries. Always counted amongst the top handful of male playback singers, he has left an indelible mark on the annals of Hindi film music.

There is no way that this voice will make you ever forget another signature rendition – “Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugley, Ugley Heere Moti” from ‘Upkar’ (1967). The song that created a patriotic storm in the country, in wake of the 1965 war, brought him the national award for the Best Male Playback artist in 1968. Besides this recognition, he also has 5 nominations and 3 awards in the Filmfare Awards for the Best Male Playback. He was honored with a Padam Shri in 1972.

Coming to the selection for today. As I browsed through the available songs of Mahendra Kapoor, my mind went back to the set of non film songs once again. I checked through the list and picked up this song, a song that is assuredly going to hasten the heart beats and will make you drum your fingers on the table tops. As I heard it again today, I realized this song has to be right up there with the very best renditions of this artist. The words are of course beautiful, and so is the melody. Yet what captures the attention is the manner in which it has been rendered with complete involvement with the spirit of the verses, and the frank abandon that so clearly expresses a delight in the voice – booming happiness, so to say.

At first, it was Jagmohan who came up with the wonderful NFS – “Us Raag Ko Paayal Mein Jo Soya Hai Jagaa Do”. Then it was Rafi, who captured the enchanted attention of the listeners with “Tum Aao, Rum Jhum Karti Paayal Ki Jhankaar Liye”. And now, it is the turn of Mahendra Kapoor, to step up and present the most pleasantly surprising song of the ‘paayal’, that will have you in raptures. The more I listened to it, the more it melted into me, buzzing from every pore of my being. Gosh, what wonderful melody this one is. I am sure you will treasure it, and love it, just as I have.

The verses tell of the remembrance of the beloved, as the memories of the adorable persona seem to flit through the mind and the dreamscape. Memories of a brushing feeling, memories of a fairy like face, lighting lamps of awareness in the silences of the mind. What a sublime composition, rendered with such candid gusto. This rare sound of Mahendra Kapoor was recorded sometimes in the later part of 1960s. I have not been able to get any confirmatory information on the lyricist and the music director. But we will have to say, they have together created a fabulous gem.

Enjoy.

Song-Run jhun chhun chhun paayal ke geet lutaati (Mahendra Kapoor NFS)(1960) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor

Lyrics

run jhun
chhun chhun
paayal ke geet lutaati
ik yaad suhaani aayee
saawan ki
saawan ki ghataa si chhaayee
run jhun
chhun chhun
paayal ke geet lutaati
ik yaad suhaani aayee
saawan ki
saawan ki ghataa si chhaayee

paayal ke chhanakte swar se
ik parchhaain se ubhari
sapnon ke neel gagan mein
ik roop ki pari utri
mann ke sooney
se aangan mein
sudhion ke deep jalaati
ik yaad suhaani aayee
saawan ki
saawan ki ghataa si chhaayee

chhoo gayaa kaanpte mann ko
ik lehraata sa aanchal
pyaasi saanson par bikhre
zulfon ke mehakte baadal
akulaai si
har dhadkan mein
soi si pyaas jagaati
ik yaad suhaani aayee
saawan ki
saawan ki ghataa si chhaayee

run jhun
chhun chhun
paayal ke geet lutaati
ik yaad suhaani aayee
saawan ki
saawan ki ghataa si chhaayee
saawan ki ghataa si chhaayee
saawan ki ghataa si chhaayee
saawan ki ghataa si chhaayee
