The Many Colors of Love #9 – Glances Stealing the Heart
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
And so wrote the scribe

tere nainon ne chori kiya
mera chhota sa jiyaa, pardesiaa. . .

The onslaught of the first sight leaves behind surging longings to be there yet once again, and to see that glance, yet once again. For the one who is smitten, the emotional yearning reigns supreme in the heart and mind, and nothing else seems to be of interest in life. That glance, oh that glance –the heart simply leaps at the remembrance. And the feeling is as if the heart, that used to be mine, inside me, is no longer with me. It seems to be away. It is so engrossed with the thoughts of that first crossing of glances, with the face and the person from whom that glance came, that it seems it has gone away, to be in the company of that one special person. And hence the phrase that lovers and poets use so often – ‘dil ki chori’; the heart has been pilfered and taken away by that special person.

Ah, that feeling of vacant lightness, in the place where heart was supposed to be. The metaphor is overpowering. As one develops it further, it slowly becomes clearer why love is a matter of life and death. For heart is one thing that a person cannot live without. If that is taken away. . . Now the metaphor continues to grow in strength. For now it implies that the life of the person is in the custody of another. For the heart, that is the sustenance of life, is in the hands of someone else. And to whom would one entrust such a vital possession, or allow it to be taken. Only by someone who is the closest, who is the most dear, to whom one will willingly entrust and with whom one will share the most essential, the most personal possessions.

And the metaphor continues to become richer and powerful. Heart is a thing that is inseparable from self. Separation of the heart from the self is unthinkable. The results are the end of life as we know it. Continuing this thread of analysis, the person to whom the heart is entrusted, automatically becomes inseparable from self. For if the beloved is where the heart is, then the beloved also becomes non-different, non-separable from self. As one dwells on this metaphor, and the import of this phenomena sinks in, one can begin to understand the state of mind of the person within whom this emotion called love has been ignited. The meaning of giving one’s heart to another, the meaning of another taking away or stealing away one’s heart – the significance of that begins to become clearer. As it turns out, the beloved is as important as life itself, and maybe more, as we know from the tales of what extremes lovers will go, for the sake of their love.

Ah, this mysterious phenomena of giving your heart, of exchanging hearts, of stealing hearts – oh so lovely a thought it is. It means there is one person in this world whose importance, whose eminence is more worthy than anything else in this life, or anything else in this world. This here is another theme that the philosophers and poets and lovers have dwelt up across the ages and spent endless thoughts on. The concept and the condition of making another person inseparable from self is manifested in the idea of giving your heart to her (or him).

Of course, the Hindi films are replete with songs that so well embody this theme. Any number of songs can be listed and it was a difficult choice to pick one for this write up. The one I really love to attach to this thought is noted at the top of this post. Alas, that song is already posted here.

And so I bring to the blog, this heavenly non-film rendering by Hemant Kumar. A song of such wondrous beauty, of such a lilting melody that is bound to sweep you off your feet. Bringing up such numbers that are obscure, that are heard of so less, gives a confidence about the richness of the treasures that is still out there to be discovered and played again.

I tried to search for more information about this song, but the internet does not seem to carry any additional info, other than the indication on one site that the music composition is by Hemant Da himself. The time period of this song is indicated as 1940s, but I am not certain about it.

Listen to this lovely melody, be swept off your feet, and let your heart be stolen away. :)

And if your heart is already with someone else, well here is another enchanting number to serenade that someone special. :) :)

Enjoy.

Song-Masti bhari nazar teri (Hemant Kumar NFS)(1950) Singer-Hemant Kumar, MD-Hemant Kumar

Lyrics

masti bhari
nazar teri
le gayi haaye
dil mera dil mera
masti bhari
nazar teri
le gayi haaye
dil mera dil mera
aankhon mein tu
tu hi saans mein
tera hi mann mein basera aa
dil mera
masti bhari
nazar teri
le gayi haaye
dil mera dil mera

dekha na is tareh se
pehle mujhe kisi ne ae
dekha na is tareh se
pehle mujhe kisi ne
apna banaa ke chhoda
mujhko teri hansi ne
mujhe har ghadi
rahe bekali
teri yaad ne gheraa aa
dil mera
masti bhari
nazar teri
le gayi haaye
dil mera dil mera

aisa na ho ke mujh par
hansne lagey zamaana aa
aisa na ho ke mujh par
hansne lagey zamaana
ban jaaye ye mohabbat
ek dukh bharaa fasaana
meri zindagi
tere haath mein
mujhe aasraa tera aa
dil mera
masti bhari
nazar teri
le gayi haaye
dil mera dil mera
aankhon mein tu
tu hi saans mein
tera hi mann mein basera aa
dil mera
masti bhari
nazar teri
le gayi haaye
dil mera dil mera
