Rare Performances – Things Unique and Unexpected #2

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -

One aspect of the unexpected interludes on the Hindi film screen are the occasions when one gets to see songs performed on screen by the most unexpected actors. One does always expect the lead pair or pairs and occasionally the side heroes and side heroines to be performing songs of all types on screen. Of course the main comedy players are almost always expected to be performing songs of all types on screen. If you see the name Mehmood or Johnny Walker or IS Johar or even Jagdeep in the credits, one can be almost certain the film will have some song by them. This has been true for these actors, even during their senior years – one can see Johnny Walker in ‘Shaan’ (1980) joining the group song “Yamma Yammaa. . . Ye Khoobsurat Samaa”.

Then, there are actors who may play the roles of parents and teachers – well one can expect them to perform songs in some films during their careers. Then we have the dancers, especially the lady dancers, who are almost always expected to perform some dance song, if their names appears in the cast of actors. Notably think of Helen, Bela Bose, Faryal, Padma Khanna, Jaishree T etc.

Then we have another category of performers – the regular character artists. Most of the senior and well known faces in this categories have performed songs during their careers. For example Pran has sung many songs in many films in his long career. Many senior character artists have graduated from being lead players earlier in their long careers. So one can easily expect them to perform a song or two occasionally. After moving into character roles, Bharat Bhushan got to sing “Tum Bin Jaaun Kahaan” in the film ‘Pyaar Ka Mausam’ (1969). Likewise Lalita Pawar performed the lorie song “Jhoome Re Jhoome Re” in the film ‘Parvarish’ (1958). Names such as these, being more familiar, do not elicit any great surprise when you see them performing songs on screen. But then there are other names that do. We have Iftekhar joining Kishore Kumar and Samar Chatterjee on screen, in the song “Ek Chhoti Si Naukri Ka Talabgaar Hoon” in the film ‘Naukri’ (1954). Character actor Kumar was the choice of K Asif to perform the rousing “Zindabad Zindabad, Ae Mohabbat Zindabad” in the film ‘Mughal e Azam’ (1960). Prem Chopra has sung occasionally on screen – a Beatles like song in the film ‘Kunwaari’ (1966), and also in films ‘Nafrat’ (1973) and ‘Samaaj Ko Badal Daalo’ (1970). Then some really surprising on screen performances. We have music director Jaikishan singing “Ae Pyaase Dil Bezubaan” in the film ‘Begunaah’ (1957) – a performance that has become really memorable just for the reason that no part of this song or for that matter, the film, is available in video format. Then we have Mukesh himself, play the role of a tonga driver and lip syncing his own voice in “Chhoti Si Ye Zindgani Re” in the classic ‘Aah’ (1953). Next, we know about Shailendra performing songs in films ‘Musaafir’ (1957) and ‘Boot Polish’ (1953). Ah yes, we have Anand Bakshi performing the song “Bijli Giri Kahaan Se” in the film ‘Picnic’ (1966).

More surprises, and very unexpected ones in store. Character actor Jayant performing a very energetic “Ae Naazneen Ae Gulbadan” in the film ‘Ek Nannhi Munni Ladki Thi’ in the year 1970. Character actor Krishna Kant has done three songs on screen. I will refer to the one for which video is available. The song is “Jogi Aaya Le Ke Sandesaa Bhagwan Ka” from the film ‘Post Box 999’ (1958). Character actor Jeevan, sharing the stage with Cuckoo, and performing “Chaupaati Pe Kal Jo Tujhse Aankh Matakka Ho Gayaa” in the film ‘Afsaana’ (1951). Then we have Anwar Hussain. He has performed a duet with Pradeep Kumar – “Bholey Bhaale Insaanon Ka Is Duniya Mein Kaam Nahin” in “Tu Nahin Aur Sahi” (1960), and has sung the lead in the very lovely group song from the film ‘Bahaaron Ke Sapne’ (1967)
“Chunri Sambhaal Gori, Udi Chali Jaaye Re”. Then we have Ram Avtar, not a frontline comedian, but still getting to perform a very energetic dance number with Sohan Kapila in the film ‘Chaand Ki Duniya’ (1959) – “Ho Ke Rocket Pe Sawaar”. Asit Sen, not to be left behind, has done a few songs on screen, notably “Taash Ke Baawan Pattey” in the film ‘Tamanna’ (1969). Then we have Leela Misra, the eternal mausi (or grandmausi) joining in the group song “Uthen Sabke Kadam Dekho Ram Pam Pam” in the film ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979); I believe she has other song performances to her credit earlier in her career also. We also have the character actor Krishan Dhawan belt out the boisterous folk song “Chalat Musafir Moh Liya Re Pinjre Waali Muniya”in ‘Teesri Kasam’ (1966).

Then we have other one song wonders – a junior artist by the name Mauji Singh gets to sing on screen the song “Evein Duniya Deve Duhaayi” from the film ‘Jaagte Raho’ (1956). Comedian Dhumal has performed the song “Ciao Ciao Bambiaana, Ishq Hai Marz Puraana” in the film ‘Rangoli’ (1962). We also have Ram Mohan lip sync the playback by RD Burman in the film ‘Kitaab’ (1977) – “Dhanno Ki Aankhon Mein Raat Ka Surmaa”. I could go on with this list with names like Sunder, Rehman, Dulari, Sajjan, and many more. And I am sure readers will be able to add more such surprise performances to this list. (Btw, can anyone recall a song performed by Madan Puri, or by Tiwari?)

So, coming to the surprise artist for today. The protagonist for this post is character actor CS Dubey. Of the many artists that I would expect to have performed songs on screen, this occasion was a real surprise for me as I did not expect CS Dubey would be lip syncing a song on screen. And that too, no less than a qawwaali, in the on screen company of Shakila Banu Bhopali. The film is ‘Ramu Dada’ from 1961, but we shall come back to the song and the film a little later.

With an active film career that spans more than four and a half decades, CS Dubey has performed in over 200 films in side roles; well actually in sidey roles :), as we shall find out shortly. Most regulars will recall him as the drinking buddy of Dilip Kumar in the film ‘Daagh’ (1952), as the wicked and troublemaking man servant in the house hold where Nutan works as a maid in the film ‘Seema’ (1955), as the double dealing used car dealer who sells a defective motorbike to Amol Palekar in ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ (1975). And many more such shady characters on screen.

Born on 4th September, 1924, CS Dubey participated in the Quit India movement while still in his teens, and also spent time in jail on that account. After being released, he made his way to Bombay, in search of employment. In Bombay, he gravitated towards the film industry, and joined Bombay Talkies as an office boy. He soon rose to the position of production controller and then to being the assistant director to Amiya Chakravarty.

His earliest appearance in front of the camera is listed as the film ‘Devdaasi’ in 1945. From then to the end of the decade, he really had just a handful of roles. Then in 1952 came ‘Daagh’, then ‘Patita’ in 1953, followed by ‘Seema’ in 1955. The roles in these films brought attention to him as a character artist for roles with tones of gray. After this exposure, he became a busy actor, averaging six to eight films over the next many years. His repertoire of roles almost always was being a dishonest moneylender, a double dealing businessman, a priest with a vested interest, a small time thief, a dishonest office worker, and similar such roles from all walks of life.

At the turn of 1970, the film industry was undergoing many changes, and with it was transforming the tastes of viewership. A whole new generation of moviegoers was now sitting in the cinema halls, who were not familiar with the name of CS Dubey. And then 1975 happened and with it came the film ‘Zinda Dil’ having Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh in the lead. CS Dubey had a typical role in this film. And besides, he had a one liner ‘takia-kalaam’ in this film – “Dhakkan Khol Ke”. This one liner became so famous that it brought the character actor out of virtual obscurity and back into limelight. His popularity grew. He was back in business and in the thick of film making once again. He went on to have a radio talk show of his own, that was named after this one liner. In this program, he would use these words as a suffix with almost every sentence to impart a touch of humor to the proceedings.

He continued to be active till the early 1990s. He passed away in 1993, on 28th September. In a life that remained on the side roles in shades of gray in the industry, he was known as a very good human being, who is known to have helped many a needy families, especially poor students in need of financial support.

Coming to the song and the film. The film is a production from the banner of Adarshlok, Bombay and is directed by Adarsh. The cast of actors includes Sheikh Mukhtar, Jaimala, Saleem, Honey Irani, Sapru, Nilofer, Rajan Haksar, Jagdish Shrivastav, Chand Usmani and of course, CS Dubey and Shakila Bano Bhopali. The film is a veritable treasure house of vintage Chitragupt melodies. Of the ten songs in this film, two fabulous songs are already on this blog. Here is the third, and gosh, what wonderful qawwaali this one is. The lyrics are from the pen of Mahrooh Sultanpuri. And ah, what superb wizardry of words. Sample these lines,

ke rasta bhool ke poorab se rang-e-shaam aaya
jafaakaaron ke hothon par wafaa ka naam aaya

(Ah, what an occasion this is)
Sunset has lost its way
The colors of evening are appearing in the east today
And the words of love and loyalty are coming from the lips of those
Who are known for their lies and treachery in love)

Wow, what a treat of words this is. Generally, one expresses wonder by saying that the sunrise happened in the west. This is the first time I hear and read about sunset in the east, and that too, expressed so exquisitely

ke rasta bhool ke poorab se rang-e-shaam aaya

Wow and wow again.

The qawwaali starts with Shakila Bano Bhoplali initiating the proceedings, lip syncing the voice of Suman Kalyanpur. Having gone through the first antaraa and extolling the virtues of ‘husn’ and the feat of the lady love in maintaining the reputations of faithfulness and loyalty in love, she finds herself confronted by an upstart singer who rises from among the audience and comes on stage to challenge the claims made by ‘husn’. This is CS Dubey, lip syncing the voice of Mohammed Rafi. The qawwaali moves at a terrific pace, with words and ideas flowing in rapid succession, one after the other. A very lively and an interesting exchange. In the audience, we catch a glimpse of Saleem couple of times, watching the proceedings with a look of melancholy on his face.

And so this brings on record the second episode of the unexpected performances. I myself would not have believed, had I not seen this myself. Wonderfully peppy qawwaali, and an equally crisp and alert performance by CS Dubey. Just watch and enjoy.

Dear Sudhir ji,
Thanks for your this article giving a detailed information about Chandrashekhar Dubey aka C.S.Dubey.
Your serial ” Rare performances- Things Unique and Unexpected” surely
evokes curiosity to read in details and as expected you never disappoint entertaining the readers with your highly studied detailed articles.
Though today’s article seems to be No 2 ,i dont remember having seen its 1st part. i checked your earlier 30 articles too. may be the Title was not there. please let me know which was the first article of this series.
C.S.Dubey actually did a non descript small role first time in film Paak Daaman-1940 and thereafter till Daag he did mostly uncredited roles only.He too considered his first role as Daagh-1952 only.
One day I saw Dubey with 3-4 friends sitting in a small hotel in our vicinity in Andheri. First I could not place him exactly, then it flashed on me and I went to him, introduced myself and had a long talk with him for almost half an hour. He lived in Seven Bungalows area of Andheri. I saw and met him few more times. That time of course I was not into writing on old films/songs etc,so I never thought of taking down his details.
When I learnt later that he died,I felt sad.
One important thing about him is that he Directed one film also. The name is ” Kismet palat ke Dekh-61″.
I have commented on the film and C S Dubey, which can be seen here-

Thanks.

Arun ji,

Thanks for your detailed message which is a pleasure. As always more and additional information from you.

The first song in this series was the post number 9200, published on 26th December – “Dil Dhadke Chunariya Sarke” from the film “Shakespearewallah’ (1965). The series title is a few paragraphs down from the start of the post, so maybe missed. :)

Link is at http://atulsongaday.me/2013/12/26/dil-dhadke-chunariya-sarke/

Thanks once again,

Rgds
Sudhir

Sudhir-ji, this is EXCELLENT (or as Shipa Shetty would remark in “Nach Baliye” “Sooper se Oopper”)!!! For a long while I used to wonder who portrayed the role of the used car dealer in “Chhoti Si Baat.” Today I know it was C S Dubey. Though short, it was an excellent performance. Unfortunately, many actors were typecast and had no opportunities to showcase their talent. We are poorer because of that.
