A very special song for Mohammad Rafi fans. This is what is real effortless singing. He makes it sound as if it is his ‘baayen haathh ka khel’. And it was his forte to seamlessly go from one mood to another, go from light, comic mode to qawwali, sounding quite serious and melodious and switch to western style, all in the space of less than a minute. If what I say does not make sense, than one can only listen to this song and confirm. What range and what smoothness of voice and diction. And adding the punjabi tadka too in a spoken line towards the end of the song.

Normally I am not prone to such gushing praising. I rarely go out of the way. Is it any wonder, that music director’s hailing from different parts of the country and the sub-continent, were favouring Mohammed Rafi during the Golden era for all type of songs. Some had their personal favourites from their own region/linguistic groups. Yet they were astute enough to know where to go if they were to excel, keep their music fresh and sweet, sustain their individual type of film songs and compete with each other in a healthy way.

Death anniversary of character actor Aagha falls on 2nd April. The song I was talking about above is from the film Chhora Chhori (1955). As per the Rafi excel sheet it is picturized on Aagha. So this is a tribute song, unfortunately without video, on the occasion of Agha’s death anniversary . One song from this film is posted in the past here.

Kidar Sharma is the lyricist and Roshan is music director.

Song-Khaali jeben hon kadki ho ladki ho(Chhora Chhori)(1955) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

Khaali jeben hon kadki ho
mera dil maange woh ladki ho
? ? ?
khaali jeben hon kadki ho
mera dil maange woh ladki ho
haay re haay haa
haay re haay
ke jis ke dil mein mere liye
ik prem ki jwaala badhki ho
kadki ho ladki ho
haay ladki ho
o khaali jeben hon kadki ho
mera dil maange woh ladki ho
haay re haay
haay re haay
ke jis ke dil mein mere liye
ek prem ki jwaala badhki ho
kadki ho ladki ho
haay ladki ho

hai der tumhaare aane ki
hai der tumhaare aane ki
ji badle duniya deewaane ki
apni qismat
apni qismat wo qismat hai
jo thukraayi huyi dar dar ki ho
kadki ho ladki ho
haay ladki ho
khaali jeben hon kadki ho
mera dil maange woh ladki ho
haay re haay
hu aa hhaa
haay re haay
ke jis ke dil mein mere liye
ek prem ki jwaala badhki ho
kadki ho ladki ho
haay ladki ho

haa aaaa aan
din raat to faaqa masti hai
masti ee hai
din raat to faaqa masti hai
ji yeh duniya mujh par hansti hai
ji yeh duniya mujh par hansti hai
wo mere hon yeh ho kaise
wo mere hon yeh ho kaise
ho kaise
jab saari duniya zar ki ho
kadki ho ladki ho
haay ladki ho
khaali jeben hon kadki ho
mera dil maange woh ladki ho
haay re haay
haa haa
haay re haay
ke jis ke dil mien mere liye
ek prem ki jwaala badhki ho
kadki ho ladki ho
haay ladki ho

jaise parwaana candle par
candle par rr
gir jaaun teri sandal par
sandal par rr
mit jaaun teri sandal par
lut jaaun teri sandal par rr
arey bhai wo sandal kidhar hai
mere sar mein tera saudaa hai
ab khair hamaare sar ki ho
kadki ho ladki ho
haay ladki ho o o

“Normally I am not prone to such gushing praising. I rarely go out of the way.” Reminded one of my high school teacher who would never give an “A” to his students just because he wanted his students to stretch their ability. But there were few “fortunate” students who were blessed with “A” in his class. He was the top ranked “hateful” professor in our college.
Thanks for the melodious Rafi song, Nahmji.

Khyati ji,

I know, being called “hateful’ is an occupational hazard for some, who are not swayed by false praise, so wont give praise lightly.

I like this song on very first hearing.
